May woke to birds chirping very loudly. She sighed and thought of the wonderful dream she had been having before being interrupted. She sat up and looked to her night stand to see a note. She furrowed her eyebrows and picked it up. She looked curiously at the the unfamiliar writing. The letter said:

Dear Ms. Potter,

I wish to speak to you in my office. Meet me after your last class of the day.

Albus Dumbledore

May sighed once more and pulled herself out of bed. She bent over her trunk, unlatching it, and picked out her uniform, which now had a new gold and scarlet patch on the front as well as a scarlet collar. She slipped it on, pairing it with her new flats she had bought. She swept to the mirror and peered at herself in her new uniform. Except it shouldn't be mine, she thought. She knew she should've just let the Sorting Hat say what house she was best in, but she couldn't help it. She wanted to be with her brother. Oh what have I gotten myself into, she thought. She flatened some wrinkles on her robes and turned to walk out of the room. She swept down the stairs and out through the portrait hole. She walked down to the Great Hall, avoiding some trick steps. She sat down at the Gryffindor table, where she knew she didn't really belong, and began to eat her food. She sighed and took a sip of juice. She looked over to the Slytherin table to see Draco laughing with his friends. Draco turned his head slightly and saw May watching him. He turned his head all the way and waved slightly at her. She waved back and smiled sadly. Draco turned back to his friends and May looked back down at her food. She sat alone in this big hall, feeling like she didn't belong where she was. A gust of wind and the sound of flapping wings burst through the noises of the Great Hall. May looked up at a lot of owls delivering letters and gifts to the students. May watched as a large eagle owl swooped down to rest on the table in front of Draco. He unlatched the letter and package from the bird's leg and the owl flew off.

May stood up from her seat at the end of the Gryffindor table and walked up to McGonagall to get her schedule. McGonagall handed her the schedule and May swept out of the Great Hall. May looked down at her schedule and saw that her first class was Potions with the Slytherins. She headed in the direction of the dungeons and walked quickly to class. She sat down at a table towards the center of the room, where she would be near both Gryffindor and Slytherin. The Potions Master, Severus Snape, looked up curiously at her. She ducked her head and pulled out her textbooks. She set her textbooks on the desk in front of her as more students began streaming in. She didn't even glance up as Harry and Ron, followed by Hermione shortly, sat next to her.  She sighed and flipped through her textbook. She looked up as Snape stood to begin the lesson. She started to zone out and soon found Snape in front of her, looking down at her with a angry expression. May gulped and looked down at her feet. Snape then moved on to Harry. May struggled to keep the flood of tears from bursting from her eyes. She thought of everything that happened. Oh, how hard it was to stop herself from crying out. She couldn't hold it back any longer and soon found herself silently crying. She wiped away her tears as a paper flew through the air and hit her on the cheek. She unfolded the paper and glanced at the writing. It said:

May,

Are you okay? Meet me after dinner by the lake, please.

DM

DM. Of course it was Draco Malfoy. She looked up to see Draco staring at her, waiting for a reply. She nodded her head and turned back to he front. She watched as Snape began to lecture potion making, but found herself only being able to think about Draco. She knew Draco could be a good friend, if only he showed it to other people. She found herself thinking about everything about Draco, his platinum-blonde hair, his grey eyes, the way he walked as if he didn't need to move faster through life. She found herself loving every feature of Draco. Was it true she had a crush? Did she really have a crush on Draco Malfoy? The one her own brother had turned down on his friendship? She shut her eyes and looked down. "Ms. Potter, would you care to pay attention in my class?" Snape interrupted her thoughts. She jumped slightly and looked up at him. "S-sorry, Professor Snape," She stuttered. Snape nodded his head slightly and continued with the lesson. She soon found that the lesson was over and they were all dismissed. She sighed and packed up her textbooks into her bag. She swept out the door to the dungeon classroom and headed to her next class. "May!" She heard a boy's voice call after her. She turned around and saw that it was Draco calling her. She smiled slightly and said, "Hey, Draco." Draco smiled. "So, how's your first day so far?" He asked her. May shrugged her shoulders. Draco opened his mouth to say something else, but was interrupted by his friends calling him. "Gotta go. See you later, May!" He said and turned with a wave of his hand.

May walked slowly to her next class, which was Transfiguration with Ravenclaws. She walked into the classroom with her head down and sat at a seat in the back. She grabbed her books out of her bag and set them on the desk. She sighed and looked up as the teacher, Professor McGonagall, began to speak.

May sighed as she pushed the doors to the headmaster's office open. "Ah, Ms. Potter, I'm glad you could come. Please sit. I have a topic to discuss with you," Dumbledore gestured to a chair and May sat down. "As you know, the Sorting Hat called out the beginning of the Slytherin house, but seemed to change his mind. Do you have any idea why that might be?" He said as he moved to behind his desk. May nodded, not trusting her voice. "Might I ask what the reason is Ms. Potter?" May found herself unable to look in her headmaster's eyes as she whispered, "I-I told him to put me in Gryffindor with my brother. I wanted to be in the same house with Harry." Dumbledore nodded as if he understood. He can't possibly understand, May thought, He never had to go through what I'm going through. "Well, I believe you should be in Gryffindor since that is where the hat placed you, but I have decided to put you in some classes with Slytherins and without Gryffindors. That way you, somewhat, are in both houses, where you belong," Dumbledore explained. May looked back up at the old man and nodded. "Now, I believe you must be getting to dinner. You may sit at either the Slytherin table or Gryffindor if you wish. Now, off you go," May got up and walked out of the office, feeling slightly happier than when she first went in.

May ran down the stairs and into the Great Hall. A few people turned to look at her and the Gryffindors that did scowled at her. She walked over to the Slytherin table and looked for a certain platinum blonde head. She found Draco at the end of the table with his friends and walked over to him. "Hi, Draco," She said when she was behind him. He turned around and smiled when he saw her. He moved over on the bench to make room for her and she sat down. "What is she doing here? She's a Gryffindor," One of his friends scowled. Draco rolled his eyes. "If you do recall with your short memory, Crabbe, she was almost placed into Slytherin and she's my friend," He said. May smiled rather goofily and dug into her meal.

The meal passed by quickly. May mostly listened to the conversation, but would share her interests from time to time. As Draco and May finished, they both got up from the table and walked down to the Black Lake. May smiled and sat by the lake, dipping her feet in the cool water. "So, how've you been?" Draco asked, sitting next to her. "Okay, I guess. Dumbledore said I could basically be in both houses," She answered. He smiled and said, "Well, that's good. Then, we might see more of each other." She smiled and nodded.

They ended up talking for hours and hours and found that it was almost their curfew before they finally decided to go back. "Well, I should go to the Gryffindor common room then," May stated. Draco nodded and watched as she turned and walked up the stairs. He smiled a little and turned to the entrance to the dungeons and walked down, thinking about May. He didn't want to admit it, but he really did have feelings for her, and he hoped she had feelings for him as well.
