CHAPTER 41

"If I just listened, would this whole mess have been different?" That was the single question that had been playing in Satoru's head all throughout the days he had been in the hospital, taking turns of watching three people. Right now, he's in Suguru's room, he was there for hours yet he couldn't bring himself to look at Suguru who had different apparatus all over his body. So, his eyes were kept on the tiled floor of the room, sometimes darting to the white ceiling.

"Sir, would you like some coffee or anything?" Asked by a nurse who was always with Akame. "Perhaps, rest? I will take some futon and blanket for you. I don't think I've ever seen you sleep for two days straight."

"No, I'm fine," Satoru replied coldly, his voice so low he himself didn't even recognize it as his. "Thank you."

The nurse opened her mouth and yet closed it again and decided to open it and say, "Sir, I know it's not my job to tell you this, but... everything will be alright."

"Really?" Satoru asked in a sardonic tone.

"Yes, sir. Miss Akame was injected with a huge dose of sleeping substance but she would be alright since the Doctors had treated it and as for Mr. Geto Suguru, he'd wake up soon. The bullet somehow hit a pouch of omamori coins, though the force of the bullet gave a shock to his heart and lungs, Dr. Keigo said he would be fine." The nurse smiled, hoping that the information she gave would bring Satoru delight.

"And the baby?" The unborn child Y/n chose not to reveal to him because he was too focused on this case...

The nurse's curved upward lips suddenly turned upside down. Her eyes shifted to the side. "It's... It's an unfortunate event, Sir." She murmured, she wanted to say to Satoru that at least Y/n survived but... that didn't deny the fact that his child died. "Please, call me when you need something."

The nurse was about to leave when Satoru took a deep breath that made the nurse halt, "Do you think..." he trailed off. "This is Karma?"

"Sir?"

"Do you think that this is the consequence of all the wrong I've done?"

"Sir, I—" The nurse paused, then said, "I don't know..."

Satoru bitterly laughed at himself, his eyes were exhausted yet there was nothing that would make him fall asleep, "Sorry about that. Go on with your duty." He said.

The nurse got out of the room without saying anything and saw Dr. Keigo rushing through the corridor, "Dr. Keigo, what's—"

"Y/n's awake..." he simply replied and walked past her.

The ajar door on Suguru's room made it easier for Satoru to hear that and hurriedly followed the doctor. And when the doctor opened the door in Y/n's room, they found her there sitting on the bed.

"Y/n, how are you feeling?" Dr. Keigo asked as he approached the bed with the nurse and Satoru left at the door.

"Fine..." Satoru heard her voice for the first time in 2 days and it stirred something in his heart he didn't know whether relief or... remorse. "Just a little feeble, I guess."

"Yeah, the operation put a lot of pressure and stress on you. You should take a rest for the meantime." Dr. Keigo smiled.

Y/n then put her hand on her stomach, "She's not here, isn't she?"

"She?" The nurse knew what Y/n was talking about yet it brought confusion to her since she had no idea how Y/n knew the gender in just a few weeks of pregnancy.

Y/n bitterly smiled at her and said, "I guess it's the mother's instincts..."

Dr. Keigo put a hand on Y/n's hand on top of her stomach, "She's still in your heart... forever she'll be."
