The past few weeks had been grueling. The car raced through the streets, and Rihanna's gaze was fixed outside the window. Her eyes were empty, lost in a world of memories from years ago when she was just a little kid, images of her and her cousin Maria flashing before her. As time passed, her focus waned, and she drifted into a peaceful slumber, reminiscent of her childhood.

It had been a little over a month since Rihanna escaped the torment of her mother, stepfather, and stepbrother. She had found refuge with her sister, Fiona, in the same old house she remembered from her childhood. Fiona was the one who understood the trauma Rihanna had endured, extending a comforting hand and providing the support she has needed.

Chapter 1:only the start
As the sky grew brighter, a beam of light pierced through the gaps in Rihanna's room's curtains. The light intensified, gradually waking Rihanna from her sleep. She squinted against the sudden brightness, rubbing her eyes and seating herself up and began stretching her arms as she yawned.

With her feet planted on the floor, she slowly rose from her bed, still feeling the effects of fatigue. She stumbled her way to the bathroom, where she briefly stared at her reflection in the mirror, contemplating, "I still can't believe I'm finally free."

Rihanna turned the tap, letting the water flow. She cupped her hands together, allowing the water to pool within, then splashed her face to rouse herself fully. She examined her reflection in the mirror as water trickled down her face, dripping from her chin.

Rihanna returned to her room and retrieved her new school uniform from the drawer, holding it for a moment before putting it on. After getting dressed, she grabbed her shoes from the end of her bed and quickly secured the laces. Leaving her room, she rushed down the stairs and headed to the front door, where her sister was waiting. They left the house and got into Fiona's car. The drive was quiet until Fiona broke the silence.

"Rihanna, are you excited about going to your new school?" Fiona asked, her head slightly turned toward her, but her eyes on the road. Rihanna sighed, "I'm not sure. There might be a few kids I remember from primary, and I don't think they liked me very much." Fiona chuckled softly, "Rihanna, it's been six years. I don't think it matters anymore. Besides, you'll have Maria by your side. You two were really close as kids, and she adores you. I haven't told her you've moved here yet, but I'll pick her up once we reach her house, and you can even go knock on her door. She knows I'm picking her up today, so she'll be the one to answer. If she sees you, I believe it will make her the happiest person in the world."

Fiona's words brought a smile to Rihanna's face, and she was indeed looking forward to seeing her cousin.

They soon arrived at her cousin's house, which still had the same garden as it did six years ago, just as beautiful as Rihanna remembered. Rihanna got out of the car and stood in front of the house, feeling a bit anxious about how much her cousin might have changed. She slowly approached the door and gave it a soft knock.

From inside, Rihanna's aunt called out, "Maria, your ride is here." Her voice was so recognizable whenever she said Maria's name. You could hear Maria's excited footsteps from inside. The door swung open before Rihanna, and their eyes met. Maria looked shocked, stumbling over her words, "Rihanna?"

Rihanna took a moment to examine how much Maria had grown, and it seemed Maria was going through the same process. Suddenly, a surge of energy hit Maria, and she leaped onto Rihanna, almost causing them to tumble over, squeezing her tightly. "OH MY GOSH, I'VE MISSED YOU SO MUCH, RIHANNA! YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!" Maria exclaimed in her familiar, excited voice.

Rihanna hugged her back just as tightly and teased, "Maybe you haven't changed as much as I thought." The girls giggled as they made their way to the car and sat together in the back seat.
