to say that the mayfield sisters were pissed about the move would be a gross understatement. after their mother married some sorry excuse of a man, they had only wanted everything else to stay the same.however, when informed they would be living in hawkins, indiana, their life would never be normal again. despite having an asshole for a step-brother, a mediocre house, and a douche of a step-father, samantha and maxine were left with one positive outcome, their father was still around.
if anything good had come from 1983, it was that the girls father had secured his spot as a prominent member in their life. she and max, who were total daddy's girls, were ecstatic. after their step-father found out, he became furious. thus, the decision to move to some small town in indiana was born.
of course, samantha never let her mother hear the end of it. after all, their father, sam, was the only one who truly understood the girls. he enjoyed many of the same things as them, skateboarding, driving, games, science, and the beach. now that they were moving away from him, they felt their world's crumbling down.
that isn't to say that she wasn't close with her mother. susan was a bit of an independent person, she thought, and didn't often want to talk to her or to anyone after the divorce. then, her mother found her step-father. neil, while he was very kind at times, seemed to only be close to her when it came to gatherings or when she was going to see her dad. not that samantha didn't appreciate the efforts, but she would always roll her eyes and decline the offers to 'hang out'.
maxine, max, seemed to be the only person samantha cared about recently. samantha had been more defensive lately, it seemed, and then when the move was announced, she claimed that she had grown annoyed to the insecure-bullshit neil was playing at. she supposed that was why she didn't tolerate the extreme efforts of his bonding ideas, and why she didn't make much of an effort to be closer to her mother.
and there was also maxine, her little sister. max was the main reason samantha had been more persistent to not leave california, not that she necessarily wanted to leave. max was in the eighth grade, and she had barely gotten to grow up with their dad because of the divorce. in middle school, she'd gotten to grow up with her father around, and she just wanted max to have the same opportunities.
she remembered when he always would stay up numerous late nights helping her with math, trying to help her understand the assignment. samantha would end up grasping the assignment by the end of the night, and finally being able to go climb into her bed.
well, almost always. there was a time in sixth grade, that her father had to work late and hadn't come home yet. she didn't understand the assignment, of course, and went to sit at the table for him to get home and help her. but that was when her dad's work schedule was getting switched around. sam ended up falling asleep on the table, she woke up the following morning in her bed with her math homework completed and sitting on the table.
this entire moving situation would ruin all of max's opportunities of quality time with their dad. she dismissed the entire thing as a joke at first, a certainly funny joke, and moved on.
that was, until her house started to be packed up one by one. boxes filling her living room.
the first box samantha had packed, and not in a procrastinating way, was nothing; and she chose to just give it away to donation. now, after a while, samantha was forced to pack away her room, her life. sam liked her room: it was so her, so clean, and showed all different aspects of her life. so, naturally, samantha procrastinated as long as possible to pack her room.
sam was, honestly, impressed that she packed up in the deadline her mother gave her. she'd never recently obey to anything more than a chore or quick errand her mother asked.. but, damn, could she be productive. and man was it a little difficult. her finally packing her things, made max finally pack her things. their mom was finally less stressed by it, but sam could care less if her mother was stressed by it or not.
