Route 228 greeted us with a sandstorm so thick that the whole world turned gold and gray.
After Stark Mountain, I thought we understood rough ground, but Route 228 had a different kind of warning. The sand pulled at our clothes, stung our eyes, and made every shape look farther away than it really was.
Pikachu stayed close to my shoulder, ears low against the wind, while the Fissure Badge case knocked gently against my bag.
Pikachu's meaning came through the storm. "This road hides its edges."
"Then we stay together," I answered him quietly.
Lillie held her hat with one hand while Gladion walked slightly ahead, using Crobat to check the path. Dawn kept Piplup tucked close, and Daniel watched the shifting dunes like the sand might become a puzzle if he stared long enough.
Route 229 felt calmer after that, almost too green after the harsh storm. By the time we reached the Resort Area, the air smelled cleaner, and the houses looked like they belonged to people who had forgotten how dangerous the nearby routes could be.
A staff member met us near a villa with polished windows, a wide balcony, and a garden that looked much too fancy for traveling trainers covered in sand.
"This villa is available to you," the staff member said with a practiced smile. "You may treat it as your own home whenever you visit the Resort Area."
I stared at the building longer than I meant to. "Our own house here too?"
Dawn laughed as Piplup shook sand from his head. "Ash, how many houses do you and Lillie have now?"
"Too many to count quickly," Lillie said, sounding amused and embarrassed at the same time.
Gladion looked at the villa like he was already checking exits and windows. "A secure rest point in the Battle Zone is useful."
Tox nodded while brushing ash from his sleeve. "Especially after volcano exposure, Elite Four battles, and sandstorm travel."
Daniel looked toward the sea beyond the villa. "It is also symbolically strange. A house given after so many journeys, right before one more battle for the Champion."
"I just think it has a good kitchen," Dawn said.
We had barely stepped inside before a familiar girl waited near the garden door. Emily stood there with a dark badge case in her hands, her expression more serious than usual.
"I was waiting for you," Emily said. "There is one last special badge connected to Sinnoh's hidden paths."
Lillie looked at the case. "The final one?"
Emily nodded. "The Shadowbane Badge. It is not earned by defeating darkness. It is earned by refusing to let darkness decide your direction."
Her words made the villa feel less like a gift and more like a doorway. We had reached a resort, but Sinnoh was not finished asking us questions.
The villa was tempting in a way I had not expected. There were rooms for resting, a table big enough for the whole group, and a quiet balcony where the ocean could be seen beyond the trees. For one moment, I imagined everyone staying there after Cynthia, laughing over dinner without a map between us.
Then I remembered that every quiet place in Sinnoh had eventually asked something from us.
Lillie seemed to follow the same thought. She touched the back of one chair and smiled sadly. "A home is useful because people can leave it and still come back."
Dawn looked around the villa more softly after that. "Then maybe this place is not about stopping. Maybe it is about having somewhere to return to."
Emily waited until we finished looking around before opening the badge case. The badge inside was dark enough that it almost disappeared against the lining, but silver lines crossed it like light cutting through cave walls.
