Sunyshore City looked brighter when we returned from Valor Lakefront, but the brightness felt different from the one we remembered. Before, the city had shone like a machine running without a heart. Now the solar roads, high towers, and glassy walkways felt alive again, as if Volkner's spark had moved through the whole city.

Lillie walked beside me with her badge case held in both hands. Seven Sinnoh badges rested inside, and the empty space for the Beacon Badge seemed louder than any crowd from the Grand Festival.

The Ribbon Cup was behind us now, packed safely away, but the pressure did not feel smaller. It had only changed shape. Dawn had reached the final stage of her dream, and now Lillie was walking toward the last Gym battle that stood between her and the Sinnoh League.

Pikachu sat on my shoulder, watching her instead of the city. His meaning came gently. "She is carrying the quiet before her last Gym."

I nodded, keeping my voice low. "Then we stay beside her until she turns it into strength."

Dawn walked on Lillie's other side with Piplup and Togekiss close behind. She had lost the Grand Festival final, but she was not walking like someone who had been broken by it. She watched Lillie's badge case with the serious understanding of someone who knew what a final stage felt like.

Sunyshore had been the place where Volkner almost forgot why battles mattered, and it had been the place where Team Rocket tried to turn the city's tower into their escape route. Coming back after the Grand Festival made the city feel like it was waiting for a second answer. Ash had already given Volkner one. Today, Lillie had to give hers.

She did not say much while we walked. That was normal for her before a serious battle. Lillie did not become loud when she was nervous. She became careful, as if every thought needed to be held gently enough not to break.

Gladion seemed to understand without asking. He stayed a half step behind her, not pushing, not protecting too much, only present. Sometimes that was the best thing a brother could do.

Before heading to the Gym, we took a smaller road toward a house that stood away from the busiest solar paths. The house looked ordinary at first, and maybe that made it worse. It had walls, windows, and a door like any other house. Nothing about it said that a boy who once lived there would grow into someone who tried to replace the world.

The woman outside recognized the sadness in our faces before we said anything, and her eyes moved toward the old door.

"A long time ago, there was a boy named Cyrus who lived here," she said quietly. "He seemed to shun others, and he preferred the company of machines. He was a brilliant student, I recall. I often wonder what became of him."

Nobody answered quickly. We knew what had become of him. Cyrus had tried to tear the world open, had been dragged into the Distortion World, and now sat in prison while Mom and Looker searched for the remaining shadows he had left behind.

Lillie looked at the house for a long moment. "He was a child here once."

Daniel's voice was careful. "That does not erase what he did. It only reminds us that monsters are not born already finished."

Tox folded his arms, his expression quiet but hard. "And that harm still had to be stopped."

Gladion looked at Lillie for a moment, then toward the house. "Understanding where someone came from cannot become an excuse for letting them hurt others."

The woman did not know the whole story, and we did not give it to her. We thanked her and moved on, leaving the house behind us. Lillie closed her badge case before the Gym came into view, and when she looked up again, her eyes were steadier.
