The road toward the Grand Festival did not feel like a normal road anymore. Dawn had five Ribbons, I had the Beacon Badge, and Lillie still had Volkner waiting for her once Sunyshore Gym was repaired. Every goal was suddenly close enough to touch, which somehow made each step feel heavier.
Neighborly Town gave us a softer stop before Valor Lakefront. It was smaller than Sunyshore, with flower boxes along the windows and a Contest practice hall beside the Pokémon Center. Dawn's mother, Johanna, was already there when we arrived, speaking with a group of young students and looking as calm as ever.
"Mom!" Dawn called, running forward with Piplup hurrying beside her.
Johanna hugged her gently. "Congratulations on your fifth Ribbon, Dawn. I knew you would reach the Grand Festival."
Dawn smiled so brightly that Piplup puffed up beside her. "I did it. Now I just have to make sure I am ready."
"That is why I am glad you arrived," Johanna said. "Nurse Joy caught a fever, and I promised to substitute for her during today's local Contest lesson. The young students still need help practicing performance moves."
Dawn looked from the students to her Pokémon. "You want us to teach them?"
"I want you to help them observe," Johanna said. "Moves are not only power and sparkle. They are timing, distance, and trust."
Tox nodded with immediate approval. "That is a safer lesson than teaching children to chase bigger explosions."
Daniel adjusted his glasses. "It also fits Dawn's current preparation. Teaching a method often clarifies it."
Dawn opened her notebook and turned to Pachirisu and Lopunny. "Then we can teach Ice Chandelier."
A little girl in the front row lifted her hand. "Is that a new Contest move?"
"It is a combination," Dawn said. "Lopunny forms the ice shape, and Pachirisu lights it without breaking it."
Lopunny stepped forward with graceful confidence, using Ice Beam to make a hanging ring of delicate frozen points. Pachirisu bounced beneath it, cheeks sparking, but Dawn held up one hand before the electricity touched the ice.
"Small sparks first," Dawn reminded her. "Not the biggest flash."
Pachirisu's meaning came eager and careful. "Tiny light first. Big sparkle later."
The sparks entered the ice and made the ring glow like a chandelier in a ballroom. The students gasped, and Pachirisu almost bounced too high from pride. Lopunny caught her gently with one arm before she crashed into the ice.
Lopunny's meaning came warm and amused. "A beautiful light still needs balance."
Dawn laughed. "That is the lesson. Pachirisu makes it shine, and Lopunny keeps it elegant."
The students tried smaller versions with their own Pokémon. Some cracked the ice, some used too much electricity, and one Shinx lit the whole practice ring so brightly that everyone had to cover their eyes. Dawn did not scold anyone. She helped each student slow down, look again, and notice what their partner was trying to say.
A pair of twins struggled with a Budew and a Shinx because they kept trying to make both Pokémon shine at the same time. The sparks hit the ice too early, the powder drifted too late, and both children began talking over each other. Dawn stopped them before frustration became shouting.
"Do not start with the finish," Dawn said. "Start with the question. Which partner is leading, and which partner is supporting?"
The twins looked at each other, then at their Pokémon. When Shinx stepped forward first, Budew waited and added powder only after the sparks had settled. The result was smaller than Ice Chandelier, but it finally looked intentional. Johanna's smile widened, and I knew Dawn had noticed.
