Karate Kid: My Shot Chapter 1
In California, you can be a new man.
That's what Alexander hoped when he stepped out of the taxi and arrived at the apartment complex.
"Thank you," Alex tipped the driver, before he closed the door behind him.
Getting out he took a whiff of air. The air was the same. The sun was the same. The world was the same. Yet it was crazy to think he was on a whole other continent. America.
The apartment complex looked sleazy..run-down, old..rusty. It was clear it was past its prime.
Though Alex was used to that.
It wasn't any different from his past home in the Caribbean. He didn't come from wealth.
With this he would be just alright. He hoped.
"You and me.." Alex spoke to himself. He did that sometimes when he had no one to talk to. Just say his thoughts out loud. "We may be young, scrappy, and hungry. We may be nothing now. But I will make something out of you. I'll make you a home. Just you wait."
Just you wait, another signature catchphrase of him. A reminder that things would get better...he just had to put in the work.
When you're at the bottom that is all you can do. Put in the work and try a bit harder.
So with some motivation in his step Alex commenced forward and went inside the gates of the apartment complex.
Inside he passed by multiple different people. Nobody paid him attention.
Other than a few curious stares or some nosy looks, everyone minded their own business.
He didn't like that. Walking into this new world..at least that is what it felt like to him. He was a nobody.
He didn't like being a nobody. Not one bit.
It felt lonely.
He had no family..no friends..just him and himself in this new world.
"Hey at least that said they have a-" Alex's hopes washed away, (pun intended) as he noticed the supposed community pool was entirely drained. "Well..great."
At this point it could just be considered a large drain that was collecting dirt at the bottom..because that is kind of what it was at this point.
He walked up to his supposed apartment room which was just up the stairs. He had lied about his age, just so he could buy himself an apartment for one. That was all he needed for now.
"Just..get settled in for now.." Alex muttered to himself. He tried the door knob.
Though the door wouldn't open.
"C'mon, let's try harder," He tried again with more force.
"Open- you dang door- open!" Alex commanded like that would help.
"Um.."
Alex turned to notice a kid around his age staring at him.
"What?!" Alex snapped, just out of feeling embarrassed he went on the offensive. "Never seen a door before?"
"I- uh, was going to suggest you use a key," The boy just said back as he scratched his head.
"Oh..right," Alex smiled sheepishly.
