You stare at the message on your phone with a frown. The guy you were supposed to go out with had canceled. You sigh, turn off the device, and get back to the book you were reading.
"Well if it isn't the living contradiction," A guy says as he crosses his arms. His face is anything but serious.
"Hey Buck," You chuckle and close the book.
"Slaying aliens one moment," He strains to read the cover of your book. "And reading Pride And Prejudice the next."
"Hey, it's a good story."
"Yeah not really my type," he sat down on the bench next to you with his legs crossed.
"Oh really? When was the last time you read a book? 1940?"
"1943 I'd reckon."
"Good grief old man. How do you live?"
Bucky rolled his eyes. Your phone buzzed. It was the guy from a party responding to your question about rescheduling.
Luke: How about we forget about the whole thing? I don't think I want to date right now.
You frown.
Bucky grabs your phone, "Who's he?"
"No one give it back!"
Bucky scrolled up to see the thread of messages, "Hot date?"
"Not anymore give me my phone!"
He passed it back, "Are you going?"
"No. Apparently he changed his mind."
"Jerk," Bucky mumbles.
You look at him, " He just doesn't feel like like going out I guess."
"What kind of idiot gives up the chance to go out with someone like you?" Bucky smiles slightly. "Are men these days blind?"
"I wonder sometimes," You scoff.
"So seeing as you're free tonight, how about it?" Bucky shrugged.
"Bucky Barnes, are you asking me out?" You ask in disbelief.
"Yes Y/n. Because unlike that idiot I would consider myself a lucky man if a lady such as yourself would spend her time with me. Listen Y/n, we've been best friends and mission partners for some time now. I'm tired of hiding how I feel okay? I like you, a lot. And I'm tired of watching these stupid boys treat you like you're just another girl on their lists."
"Oh bucky," You smile and stare at your lap.
"Come on. All you need to bring is yourself. Let me spoil you for one night yes?" He prods.
"Oh bucky."
"You said that once already."
"I like you too," You admit rubbing your arm nervously. "I just didn't think you would back."
"So tonight?" Bucky smiles.
"Yes Buck. I would love to go out with you!"
He practically jumps to his feet, "Awesome. I'll pick you up around 6?"
"Or I'll meet you, sure."
"Nope, I'm picking you up," Bucky insists.
You lose all your focus for the rest of the day. You even smiled while doing your sets in the compound gym. And that was your least favorite part of being an Avenger! At five you rushed to your room, shut the door, did a little happy jump, and started to get ready. Once you had a shower, dried your hair, and styled it how you wanted you opened your closet.
