Eileen was not enjoying her time at the Grand Canyon so far. National tourist attraction her ass. Although, not everyone that visited had to experience the joys of near death. She was cold, wet, and her head hurt. Being thrown into the air and colliding with a metal pole would do that. But I won't toss you straight into the action like that. Let's start an hour and a half before the current moment.
The bus bumped down the road, a cloud of red dirt steaming from the wheels. There was nothing interesting to look at outside the window apart from dust and rocks. Maybe the occasional cactus. Hold on, was that something interesting? Just kidding. It was another rock. Eileen was pretty sure Bryce, a larger boy with a slick of brown hair that clung to his head like a wet mop, had farted 5 minutes ago, and Coach wasn't letting anyone open the windows. Brittany got bad asthma, and there was something about the middle of the dessert that really set her off. One of the other boys had drawn a rather rude image on another girl's face as she slept, and nobody likes a snitch. She was probably going to have it on her cheek until they got back to the school that evening. Chatter had died down a while ago.
Every now and again, Eileen's shoulder would knock against Leo's as the bus dipped into a pothole. She wasn't talking much - she thought that if she kept her mouth open for too long the motion sickness would get the better of her and Leo would end up wearing her lunch. Tuna on toast was probably not his idea of a nice pair of shorts.
Leo made it hard for Eileen to get any rest herself. Drumming his fingers on the back of the seat in front, shifting his weight, playing with his hair and then her hair and then apologising for playing with her hair, making random comments and pointing outside, like, 'Don't you think that rock looks like a camel?' and, 'If we broke down right now and nobody found us who would you eat first? Cause personally I'd probably go for James. That's just me though'.
Back when they first met, his constant movement got on her nerves. Eileen would say she was quite tolerant, thank you very much, but it was only once she realised that the boy really couldn't help it, that she put more effort into letting him do his own thing. She didn't mind it so much now. His constant movement was kind of grounding.
Piper and Jason sat behind them. Piper started holding Jason's hand twenty minutes ago, and the girl still had a smile on her face. Eileen was glad. Her friend had been mooning over the boy for months, and the night they had finally kissed, Piper came to their shared room just after 12 in the morning and happy-screamed into her pillow. Eileen had let her take her hand and they jumped around the room until they were weak from laughter. The two looked like the perfect couple.
