- You and Karma made your way to the cafeteria, it would be your first lunch period together.
"Do you really want to have lunch with me today?' Karma asked you. "All I do is study. Wouldn't you rather talk with your friends?"
"Nah, I wanna spend time with you," you smiled as you grabbed your tray which consisted of hiyajiru, white rice, curry and boiled vegetables, Karma had the same.
"Fine, but I better not hear you complain," Karma responded as you both began walking back to the classroom.
Mizuki, Kaori and Mutsuko were seated at the table you had always sat at during lunch, which happened to be right across from the entrance and exit of the small cafeteria.
"No way, Mutsuko, Kaori, look!" Mizuki pointed at the door you and Karma were walking out of.
"What the fuck is (Y/N) doing with that freak?" Mutsuko scoffed. "Must be bribing her to eat with him or something."
"Yeah! Isn't his family supposed to be like stupid rich?" Mizuki started. "Kaori, what's going on there? Surely (Y/N) has told you."
"Mhm, they're partners for a science project," she lied on the spot. "(Y/N) told me they were going to power through it today, or try to."
"Aw, poor (Y/N). Hopefully she doesn't end up in the hospital or something," Mizuki laughed.
"How much you wanna bet he's part of the Yakuza," Mutsuko added.
"Ooh, I can totally see that," Mizuki agreed.
You and Karma were seated at your desks, which you had pushed together. No one was in the classroom at that point, your classmates were all either in other classrooms with their friends or studying in the library. Karma pulled out a Physics textbook from his bag.
"Huh? So the studying thing wasn't a joke?" You asked as you began eating.
"Better not be starting to complain."
"You really do this every day at lunch?"
"Got to get good grades to get a government job, an important government job," he responded.
"Doesn't it get boring?" You tilted your head in curiosity.
"I don't know if you've noticed this but you're the only person at this school I like. Even if it were boring, I don't have much of a second choice."
"Have you even tried making friends? I'm sure it'd go better than you'd expect."
"You're full of questions today. Like I've told you, I have more than enough friends. I don't exactly feel like trying to befriend people who have taunted me and those said friends for a year, even longer for some of them."
You couldn't help but feel a bit guilty as he said that, as you were one of the many that bullied the E-Class. Talking bad about Karma regularly in an act of trying to deny your feelings for him.
"That's fair. Makes it more of an honour being your only school friend," you smiled before rethinking what you had said, it was like the word 'friend' was highlighted and underlined in your brain.
"Yeah, think of it like that," he chuckled.
You became quiet as he studied. You were just thinking about what Kaori had said about not assuming anything. But assuming was just so much easier on you than waiting. It had been two weeks since you and Karma passed the 'just friends' stage but you had no clue what stage you were at anymore.
"Alright, I'm officially ahead in physics again," he sighed in satisfaction. "Hey, what's wrong? you've barely touched your food. I've eaten more and I've had my nose in a book."
"Not hungry."
"That's not true, you're always complaining about being hungry half an hour before lunch begins, including today," he put the textbook away. "What's wrong?"
"Promise you won't get awkward?"
"When am I ever really awkward," he responded, it was nice to see his confidence back.
"Alright then," you inhaled, you had no clue why you were so nervous. "I've been talking to my friend Kaori about us."
"Wait, wait, wait, I'm gonna cut you off right there. You told your friend?"
"Well of course, she's my best friend. Was I supposed to keep it a secret?"
"Not exactly, but I just kind of assumed we were gonna be secret. I'm not exactly what people would deem as 'idle' for their friends."
"Karma, she's fine with it. She's happy I'm happy, I don't want you to be a secret" you sighed. "Now, can I finish what I was saying?"
"Yeah, of course. Sorry."
"Right, so we had this talk about what me and you were and I couldn't actually give her an answer. She told me that I can't assume we're in a relationship, which I've kind of been doing so.."
"I think it's pretty safe to assume we aren't friends," he chuckled.
"But what are we then?" You asked, fiddling with your fingers
"You know, you're really cute when you're all nervous," you were praying he wouldn't notice, of course he did.
"Karma! Just answer!"
"Fine, fine. I guess technically we're nothing. Not friends, not in a relationship."
"Oh.. I see.."
"Wait, before you get all gloomy. That's just because I haven't asked you and you definitely haven't asked me," he smiled. "So, (Y/N). Will you be my girlfriend?"
You nodded rapidly.
"I'm going to need a verbal answer, can't just assume, right?" He teased.
"Yes, I'll be your girlfriend," you hugged him tight.
He kissed your head before stroking your hair.
"Well then it's settled, no need to worry about it anymore," he spoke softly. "Now, eat your lunch. I don't want to see a single grain of rice in that bowl."
"You got it!"
