Here are some character design tips:
1. Use contrast. Contrast in the appearance (imagine them in silhouettes) and contrast in the personality (polar opposites are a common trope, but still cool!) You can also use contrast in the age and gender, or give them quirky traits. Just make them as different as possible.
2. Give them flaws, positive notes, and goals.
3. Study what people find unique.
4. It's okay to keep the character design simple. If you make it too complicated it'll be difficult to draw them over and over again.
