I don't normally sketch first, I usually skip to the lineart. But if you're sketching, you should always think of shapes! Create guidelines using all sorts of shapes and lines, even if they're wonky. Break it up, simplify it! Don't think about all the complicated stuff, this is only a sketch. Then just go over it in pen and erase. Make sure you sketch lightly to make it easier to erase.
