Clothing folds help with realism, but you don't have to use them. Here are my tips:
1. Don't just draw a bunch of random lines, especially if the character is just standing there with no visible movement at all. Only put them there if there's any pressure or tension or gravity.
2. Where there are folds or ruffles there are shadows.
3. You can use ruffles for a cute look, especially if you're drawing rolled up sleeves or long sleeves!
4. If the cloth is loose, it appears bigger than the body itself. If the cloth is tight, there are a lot of wrinkles.
