john b came back to the château around mid afternoon later that day and let the door slam loudly behind him.
"hey!" madilyn walked out into the living room, "you okay?" she asked her brother.
the boy paced around the kitchen, holding his hands behind his head. "john b talk to me" madilyn pleaded.
"jj got arrested" he fumed.
madi's heart sank when she heard her brother's words. it made her even more upset knowing the last time she saw jj she had stormed out on him.
"what??!" she exclaimed.
"shit!!" john b reached for a cup on the counter, slamming it onto the floor.
madilyn jumped back as glass framed their feet. "john b chill!" the girl shrieked.
"chill? are you seriously telling me to chill right now? madi do you have any idea w-"
"okay okay im sorry! please just.. stop yelling at me" madilyn muttered, worry adorned onto her face.
"im sorry." her brother offered her a slight smile.
she inhaled slowly, allowing herself to process all of the information. "why was he arrested?" the girl exhaled.
"he uh, took the fall for pope." john b replied, keeping his eyes focused on the floor.
"they sunk toppers' boat. that's why they beat jj up last night."
the girl's jaw dropped and her eyes shot up to her brother's face. "they- he- topper's-" she stammered.
the fact that she fixed jj's busted up face and he didn't even mention why it happened was absurd to her.
"he didn't tell you that part did he?" john b retorted. the girl stood there speechless, unsure of what to say or how to feel.
"i need to go talk to topper" madilyn said after some thought.
"no madi i don't think that's a good-" john b called after his sister but she flew out the door before he could finish his sentence.
madilyn approached the driveway to the thornton household and heard laughing coming from the balcony on the side of the house.
she walked up the steps leading to the front door and rang the doorbell. after a few moments topper's mother came to the door.
"hey madi! sarah isn't here right now" mrs thornton smiled sweetly at the girl.
"oh, that's okay, im actually here for topper" the brunette answered, forcefully turning the corners of her lips up.
"alright then, he's upstairs in his room with rafe" mrs thornton opened the door further, motioning for the girl to come inside.
madilyn smiled once more at mrs thornton before walking upstairs to topper's room.
the brunette knocked softly on the door that led to the boy's bedroom. "go away mom were busy!" topper called from inside the room.
the girl opened the door slowly and poked her head in. "hey" she said softly.
"oh hey, what's up?" the blonde greeted her.
madilyn opened the door fully and stepped through the door frame, closing the door behind her. "we need to talk." she said.
"about?" the boy asked curiously.
she walked up to the two boys' seats and picked up one of each of their hands, motioning to their bruised knuckles. "about this"
"wanna kiss it better sweetheart?" rafe asked sarcastically, earning a smack on the back of the head from the girl.
"you know he got arrested because of you topper" madi accused the blonde while getting herself a chair from his room, bringing it out to the deck.
"pogue had it coming" rafe slurred.
"excuse me?"
"he sunk my boat mads" topper reminded the brunette.
"you guys beat pope with a freaking golf club!" she shrieked.
rafe took a hit from his cigarette and threw the last few sips of beer into the back of his mouth. "he should've stayed on the cut"
the brunette girl rolled her eyes at her best friends comment before turning her attention back to topper. "who filed the charges?" she asked him.
"my mom, but i didn't stop her" he answered with a proud smirk.
madilyn scoffed before standing up and walking towards the door. "seriously, we need to drop this pogues versus kooks thing. it's getting out of hand"
topper turned around to face the girl, "see you tomorrow?" he asked, ignoring her comment. she knew he was referring to midsummers.
"mhm." she answered hesitantly before walking out of his room.
