TW - violence, smoking and mention of death,
Faint footsteps and quiet humming filled my ears. I slowly opened my eyes letting them adjust to the light that was bursting through the lazily drawn curtains.
Poppy was at the foot of her bed straightening out a thick, multicoloured, knitted blanket. She was already dressed in her uniform and looked eager to get started with her day.
I sat up in bed rubbing my neck - it always took me a while to get used to sleeping in new places and it seems Hogwarts was no exception. Despite being surrounded with magic it seemed there was no magic making the bed any comfier, my body was as stiff as anything and it felt like I hadn't slept a wink.
"Good morning sleepy" Poppy called out to me.
She walked to the head of her bed and began straightening out her knitted cushions and lining up her stuffed animals in front of them.
"Good morning Poppy. I must apologise for last night, I didn't mean to fall asleep whilst you were talking to me".
She laughed. "Don't worry about it, you had a busy day from the sounds of things".
I looked down into my lap and started playing with the blanket. The last thing I want today is everyone making a fuss and asking questions about what happened yesterday.
Poppy sat down on the bed facing me.
"Why don't you go get yourself ready? We have our first class together so I'll wait for you and we can face the thunder together".
Poppy was an angel sent from heaven. I was so nervous about every aspect of starting at Hogwarts, especially the idea of sharing a room with a stranger, but Poppy was so kind and genuine, I already felt like I'd known her my entire life.
"Thank you Poppy". And with that I jumped in the shower and got myself ready for my first class - Defence against the Dark Arts.

I took a deep breath as Poppy opened the door to the classroom. I've been over this moment a million times in my head whilst I was getting ready. I've known all summer that the first days of school would be difficult, with all eyes on the new student. But now that I had an 'exciting' tale to tell everyone, about how me and Professor Fig fought dragons and knights and watched someone tragically die, I knew the looks and the questions would be ten times worse.
As the door swung open I was pleasantly surprised - the classroom was completely empty.
"You looked anxious earlier so I thought it'd be easier if we got here early" Poppy explained sheepishly.
I gave her a warm smile. "Thank you, you're making all of this a lot easier for me".
She smiled back. "That's what friends do right? Shall we sit?"
As we took a seat at the front of the class, other students started entering the classroom from behind us. They were loud and excited to start classes after being away for the summer.
A large wooden door creaked open at the front of the room catching everyone's attention. A short elderly woman walked out, she was hunched over and looked shaky as she slowly descended the stone stairs.
"Settle down students" she exclaimed.
The classroom fell quiet and everyone starting taking their seats.
"That's Professor Hecat" Poppy whispered.
She stood directly in front of me and Poppy and shot me a curious glance. With the flick of her wand a china teapot and cup appeared and started pouring her a cup of tea. She took a sip and began the class...
