Inej POV
It took Inej a long time to work up the courage to go find Kaz. When she emerged, Jesper informed her that he had returned to the slat.
"He seemed pretty upset."
Jesper's words rattled around inside her head as she moved silently across the rooftops. The closer she got, the slower her legs carried her. Inej didn't know what she was walking into. Would Kaz be mad at her? Would Kaz put up his walls forever?
The window was unlocked when she pushed on it. She stared at Kaz, reading something at his desk, whilst sitting quietly on the window sill.
"Do you have something you want to say?" Kaz asked, not even looking up at her. Of course he knew she was here.
"I'm sorry," Inej whispered. "I shouldn't have said that to you. I'm never going to leave you."
"I love you more than I have loved anyone else." Kaz finally looked up at her. She crossed the room in one swift movement and leaned against the desk in front of him. "I'm sorry too."
Inej leaned across the table and pressed a light kiss to his lips.
"If you're going to kiss me, at least do it right," Kaz mumbled against her lips.
He limped around the desk and wrapped his arms around her waist, using his hips to press her against the desk. Inej gasped as Kaz kissed her hard. She had never realized how much passion Kaz could bring when he let his walls down.
His kisses started to trail down her neck, while one hand came up and covered her stomach.
"I'm going to try," he said. "I'm going to try and love this child."
Inej brought his lips back up to hers. "That is all I can ask of you," Inej said. "I don't want anything else but for you to always try your best. I love you Kaz Brekker, and I will always want to be with you."
"I don't want their future to be tainted by our past," Kaz said.
"No," Inej agreed.
"I guess we could move to Ravka," Kaz said. "Maybe just for a little while."
"That is a lot on you," Inej countered. "You have the dregs and everything else that you have built up over the years."
Kaz reached up and brushed a stray piece of hair from her face. "I would do anything to make you happy."
"But I don't want to be happy, while you're miserable."
This was everything Inej wanted. She was going to leave this place, for good. Not just travel around and catch slavers. She would be able to live with her family again. The only thing she didn't like about the whole thing was that Kaz would be unhappy.
"Don't worry about me," Kaz said. "I'll be fine. We have enough savings that we can buy some land and settle down for a little while. It will be good to not live with the danger."
"You love the danger," Inej pointed out.
"Will you please just let me give this to you?" Kaz almost pleaded, but not quite because it was still Kaz.
"Okay," Inej said, "let's move to Ravka."
