KATIE'S POV
April 25thI wake up wrapped in Jacob's familiar scent. My eyes squint against the bright light streaming in from the windows, slowly adjusting to Jacob's bedroom. I sit up, glancing around, but the bed is empty— it's just me, his comforter wrapped around my legs.
I swing out of bed and quickly glance at myself in the mirror to double-check my appearance, running my fingers through my hair to smooth it out. Then, I tiptoe into the living room. Jacob is lying on the couch, his large body barely fitting. It would have made more sense for him to keep me on the couch.
I glance at the clock on the mantle and see it's still fairly early. Unsure of what to do with myself, I scan the fridge for ingredients. Luckily, they have both eggs and vegetables. I hesitate, not wanting to impose, but figure that I can replace the ingredients later.
I find a few bowls, doing my best to keep quiet, and lay them on the countertop. I have to search a few cabinets before I find a cutting board, but I find a knife without any problems.
Once the vegetables are cut, I turn on the stovetop and find a skillet. While I wait for the butter to melt, I whisk the eggs together, making the base for the omelette.
I'm just about to pour the first one in the pan when I hear footsteps approaching me from behind. I turn, glancing back to see Jake, and smile. "Sorry. I didn't mean to wake you."
He shakes his head, eyes crinkling despite the drowsiness. "I could get used to this," he says, his voice husky from sleep. I roll my eyes as he wraps his arms around my waist, but my cheeks flush traitorously.
I change the subject, focusing my attention on the omelette. "You should have let me sleep on the couch. I didn't mean to take your bed."
He hugs me tighter to his chest. "What kind of boyfriend would I be, making you take the couch?"
You know, I said in his mind, you could have shared with me.
He laughs, trailing a hand up my arm. "There's only so much generosity my father will allow."
"You and I both know that's not what I meant," I clarify, raising an eyebrow at him.
"Are you talking about me?" Billy's voice echoes as he wheels himself down the hallway. When he sees our position, he doesn't so much as blink. "Because I will just about allow anything if you're cooking, Katie."
I laugh. "Want the first one?" I ask, plating the omelette and swiveling. "I'll replace what I borrowed from your fridge."
Billy shakes his head, taking the plate from me. "Nonsense. What's ours is yours, Katie. You're welcome to anything while you're here." He pauses. "Well... just about everything." He chuckles in that Dad way of his, and I smile.
"So, I was thinking..." Jake begins once Billy is out of earshot, "...maybe we can do something today? Just you and me?"
I nod, assembling another omelette. "What did you have in mind?"
