KATIE'S POV
April 30th

When the bell rings after English, I take a little longer than normal to pack up my bags. To be truthful, it's because I'm stalling, since the idea of asking anyone— especially a teacher I've had for only a few months— for a letter of recommendation makes me feel nauseous.

When the class has cleared out, I take a few slow steps to Mrs. Taylor's desk, clutching my notebook in my hands like a lifeline. "Can I talk to you about something?" My voice feels smaller than normal.

She looks up from the paper she's grading, resting her arms against the desk. "Katie. Yes, of course. Sit," she gestures toward a small stool.

I nod and take the seat, dropping my backpack on the floor. "I'm not sure if you've heard, but at the beginning of the week I found out that I'm graduating in June."

She nods and simply says, "I heard." I'm not surprised; after it was brought up at lunch, everyone at the school seemed to know. Bella must have told everyone to tone it back, though, because her friends haven't mentioned it in front of me since Tuesday.

"If you don't mind me saying this," Mrs. Taylor continues, " I believe it's well deserved. I can't speak for the whole school, of course, but you're one of the best students who's ever taken my class."

I let out a relieved breath. Good— this is good. "Thank you. I was wondering, since I have to get college applications in as soon as possible, if you were willing to write me a letter of recommendation." I try and stay firm, unbothered, but it's difficult. I've haven't felt so lost about something since I met Johnathan.

"It would be my pleasure," she says, giving me a small smile. "I'll work on it over the weekend and give it to you on Monday."

"Thank you," I gush, letting my eyes close with a swell of relief. "Seriously, you don't know what this means to me."

"I understand that your situation can be very overwhelming. You can always let me know if you need any assistance or support. I can always take a look at your essay if you need it," Mrs. Taylor adds, and her thoughtfulness makes me want to cry.

"I would... appreciate that," I say carefully, trying to choke down my tears. "Can I give you a copy now?"

After my conversation with Mrs. Taylor, I feel like I'm finally in control of the situation. Well, as much as I can be. I even smile at lunch, not too preoccupied with my own thoughts to actually participate in conversation.

"So, Prom. Who's chipping in for the limo?" Erik asks, pointing his pen around the table.

"My parents are cool with it," Angela says, glancing at Ben.
