BELLA'S POV
May 3rd

"Have you sent out your graduation announcements?" Angela asked at lunch on Monday, pushing her glasses back up her nose. It's become a near forbidden topic of conversation these days since I warned them that Katie was upset about the whole graduation thing and to scale back on the questions. "I'm drowning in them."

I sigh, pushing the food on my tray around with a fork. "No point. Renee knows when I'm graduating. Who else is there?"

Angela nods, her eyes skipping over Katie. I can read the apprehension in them— graduation announcements are all about family, and to ask Katie, whose parents were murdered? "Alice? What about you?" Angela redirects.

Alice smiles, cat-like. "'Mine are all done."

"Lucky," Angela groans. "My mom has a thousand cousins she wants me to send announcements to, and she expects all of them to be hand-addressed with a little note inside. I'm going to get carpal tunnel, honestly! I've been putting it off."

I nod despite myself, knowing the feeling. Graduation is so... soon. In a month, I will be out of high school, and... I'll be changed. A vampire.

Katie's teeth clench. "Sorry. I would offer to help, but I've practically got carpal tunnel myself. Applications," she says as an explanation. When Angela's face whitens slightly, she goes on, clearly trying to reduce the tension. "Jake's been helping," the mention of his name brightens her face, "but even he can only fill out my name and house address so many times."

Everyone chuckles, but I feel my stomach churn and set down my fork for good. I should have been helping her, too. Or we could have been working on them together, at least. But... when Edward's in the house, they're at the Rez, and when they're at the house, Edward and I are at the Cullens'. It's how it has to be; neither Jake nor Edward are fans of each other, and I know very well how Katie feels about Edward.

Angela shakes her head, glancing back at her boyfriend. "Mine is doing everything he can to avoid helping."

"Huh?" Ben asks, glancing up from his comic book. Angela just rubs his shoulder, ignoring him.

"Sorry. I can help you when I'm ungrounded," I offer, biting my lip.

"You're grounded again?" Jessica asks, her voice irregularly high-pitched. "What did you do this time?" Her eyes dance between Katie and Edward, assessing which one of them was the cause.

"You know Charlie," I say weakly, my eyes darting toward Katie. Her lips are pressed together, but she's not looking at me— she's looking at Alice.
