part 3 —- the countryside

Gojo finally understands why YN had kept her mother a mystery for the past decade.

MN's (mothers name) home is located in a small-scale countryside. The air smells damp and fresh at the same time, with a hint of woodland trees and manure. Every now and then, they hear the baa'ing of a sheep or the moo'ing of a cow, reminding them of how far away they are from the city. The rain pitter-patters down against the windows of the cottage.

"Okaasan, you still haven't thrown these away since the last time I was here." YN says as both her and Gojo step around the various bags of clutter that litter the narrow corridor.

"I don't want to throw them out, I'll need them one day." her mother states, leading them into the outdated-looking kitchen. "Come sit, you both must be starving!"

YN subtly glances at Gojo from the corner of her eye, noticing the way his head is turned to the side, looking around the house and connecting dots in his head. Her mother is a hoarder who constantly reeks of alcohol. It now makes sense to him.

She is surprised that she isn't feeling as ashamed as she thought she would be, having Gojo here with her. Maybe it's because she wants Gojo to understand why she didn't want him to join her in the first place. Or maybe it's because seeing her mother's eyes light up when she saw her again has instantly softened her heart and made her feel like everything will be okay. Even if she is already drunk before dinner.

So far, the most embarrassing moment for YN has been when her mother expressed that she likes Gojo's blindfold and that he was 'kinky', to which YN told her off while Gojo found it amusing.

Her mother has managed to prepare a delicious-smelling spread and the three of them sit down on the tatami floor by the small and quaint table.

"Is this the same home you grew up in, YN-chan?" Gojo asks her while she places a piece of steamed fish into her bowl.

"Yes." YN simply answers, but she wants to add that it was a lot more different back then. She can't do so without hurting her mother's feelings so she bites her tongue.

"We have amazing memories in in this house, don't we?" MN grins, the corner of her eyes crinkling.

YN quietly eats some rice.

Her fondest memories in this home were before her father had left them. After that, it became a spawning point for the various boyfriends her mother had, and it no longer became her home, but theirs.

"Yes." she says again.

MN turns her attention to Gojo, still smiling. "I always knew that YN was a city girl at heart. She used to beg me to take her there because she was so fascinated by the tall buildings. Everything here is flat and so it's a bit boring to look at, so I understand why she was so intrigued by it."
