part 6 —- barriers

From the moment YN had fallen asleep, Gojo hadn't stopped staring at her.

Curled up in a ball on the hospital ground, she uses his lap as a pillow while he sits cross-legged to make room for people to walk up and down the painfully white corridor.

They are still beside the door that they had wheeled YN's mother's unconscious body out of, over eight hours ago, to perform a life-saving surgery that they still hadn't heard any news about. He knows for sure that it's sometime past midnight now and that they will most likely be there until the afternoon. He doesn't mind staying with her for as long as she needs.

Gojo notices a small tear escape from under her eyelashes and hastily swipes it away with his thumb. He then cradles her cheek, soothing her with his touch. Every now and then, another tear would slip out and he would repeat the action, over and over and over again.

It seems as if YN will never run out of tears, as if they had been building up all these years and now are finally being released all at once.

It hurts him to see her this way.

Gojo is never one to be helpless, until it comes to YN. Then, he is almost always completely and utterly helpless. So much so that enemies could mock him for it if they knew. He has never known what to do when it comes to her. Since he was a teenager, he found that he somehow messed up whenever he would try to interact with her. He wants so badly to help her, if only she would just let him help her.

A whimper escapes YN's lips and her body tenses against him. A pained expression washes over her sleeping face and Gojo feels his heart skip a beat.

Again, he doesn't know what to do.

YN's let's out a sharp breath through her clenched teeth and moves her face to hide into Gojo's lap. He notices that her whole body is vibrating as if she has a fever and he presses the back of his hand to her forehead. She is warm but her skin is dry, no sign of a fever.

Suddenly, she sits up. Her hair is now dry but not styled and he can smell the hospital shampoo that she had used. He can't see her face until she slowly looks over her shoulder at him, a horrified look in her face, as if he is some kind of monster that has snuck up to grab her.

"Okaasan," she begins, her chest rising and falling at rapid succession, "is she okay?"

Gojo's lips are slightly parted as he looks at her, unsure of what to say. He settles with, "she will be," but to YN, that means he doesn't know.
