part 5 —- the sunday market

The Sunday markets are one of her favourite things to do with her mother, though it is usually only a fortnightly tradition, and involves YN travelling back to her hometown again. She finds the atmosphere peaceful, almost serene-like, in comparison to the markets that are held in the city. The population is a lot smaller, making it less overwhelming when she is trying to shop for fresh, organic fruit and vegetables grown by the local farmers who she has known since she was a child roaming the stalls on her own.

She is standing beside her mother, who is taking her time to search for the most perfect heirloom tomato, feeling the weight of it in the palm of her hand and then flipping it around to check for impurities. YN used to find the entire process boring and rather painful to watch, but now she finds it intriguing and mentally takes notes on how to choose the best produce. I really am getting old, she thinks, when she realises that this sort of stuff is now exhilarating for her.

She watches her mother, who still faintly smells of alcohol, place the tomato in her beige crotchet bag that YN made her when she first started crocheting as a teenager. She felt like she did such a poor job of it, and yet, her mother still uses it almost everyday. YN hasn't crotchet since that day in the hospital, when Gojo first showed up, and she can't tell if she misses it or not.

As they slowly walk to the next stall, her mother places her arm around YN's shoulders and lets out a delighted "ah."

YN arches an eyebrow at her as she holds her hand that is resting on her shoulder. She seems in an unusually good mood today, and it's not just from the wine she had for breakfast.

"So, YN, I took the liberty of inviting your boyfriend, as I was thinking that we could eat lunch together after we are finished shopping." MN grins wide, and YN stops dead in her tracks.

She wants to scream. "You... You didn't..."

"What's the problem?" she asks, removing her arm from around her and placing it on her own hip instead. "He told me the other day to let him know whenever you and I hung out next, so I did. He's such a sweetheart, do you know how hard it is to find a family-man these days? You should be grateful!"

Too many words infiltrating her mind, she cannot think of what to say except, "he is not my boyfriend."

"Tsk. Well, whatever. One day he will be, I guarantee it. You need to let your walls down. He is nothing like Kyō, I can tell."

YN cringes when she hears her ex-boyfriends name. She shakes her head slightly, as if to remove thoughts of him from her head before averting her attention to the more important stuff, such as the fact that her mother just invited Gojo over here to join them.
