August 1996 - Diagon Alley

When we went to Diagon Alley to shop for the new year, we had to go to the twins' new store. They had opened an amazing store in Diagon Alley called Zonko's Joke Shop. It was the most vibrant and lively joke store I had ever been to. Most of the alley had been shut down thanks to death eaters. Olivander had been kidnapped. But Zonko's was wildly busy. Harry wandered around while I stuck with the girls. Hermione and Ginny seemed really interested in the love potions.

"Hello, ladies," the twins said as they walked over to us.

"Love potions, eh?" George said.

"Yeah. They really do work," Fred insisted.

Then again," George said. "The way we hear it, sis, you're doing just fine on your own." What? I didn't know Ginny was seeing anybody.

"Meaning?" Ginny said.

"Are you not currently dating Dean Thomas?" Hermione and I looked at each other excitedly. Then I smiled at Ginny. Then I looked over at Harry, to see if he knew. But he wasn't looking at me. He was looking at Ginny. I tried to get his attention, but he was only looking at Ginny. Why is he looking at Ginny?

"That's none of your business," Ginny said, putting the love potion down and walking away briskly. Hermione and I looked around and saw Cormac McLaggen staring her up and down. When we noticed, we exhaled sharply and turned around. I quickly grabbed her by the arm and walked her away from him.

"How are Fred and George doing it?" Hermione asked as the four of us walked down the alley. "Half the alley's closed down."

"Fred reckons people need a laugh these days," Ron said. The alley wasn't like it used to be. It was dark and abandoned.

"I reckon he's right," Harry said. We walked past Olivander's and saw the busted windows of the shop.

"Oh no," I said.

"Everyone got their wand from Olivander's," Hermione said. We stepped inside to find the place completely destroyed. Ron was staring out the window when something caught his eye.

"Harry," he said, getting all of us to look. "Is it me, or do Draco and mummy look like two people who don't wanna be followed?" Draco? Here? We looked out the window and there he was with Narcissa. He looked tired. He looked sad. He didn't look like my Draco. And I couldn't help but feel like I had done it. They discretely slipped through a small alley.

"Let's go," Harry said. He slowly started following them.

"Harry," I said. "I-I don't think this is a good idea." I didn't want to spy on Draco. It didn't feel right.

"Um, ok," Harry said. "Do you want to go back? We'll meet you right after we're done?" Why did he suggest I go back? Why didn't he come back with me? I was starting to realize that maybe Harry was too preoccupied with the war to give me the proper time and treatment. Maybe being Harry's girlfriend was so much more of a responsibility than I had anticipated. Maybe I didn't really want to do it anymore.

"Ok," I said. I went back to Zonko's and hung out with the twins. I wanted to know what was going on with Draco more than anything, but I couldn't follow him. I stopped looking at Draco because I felt so terrible about Cedric. But now I felt terrible about Draco. Did that mean I was going to stop seeing Harry? But I couldn't do that to Harry with everything he's been through. But why was he staring at Ginny? And why was he quick to get rid of me?
