Stones are everywhere on Earth. Some are so brilliant that we feel compelled to pick them up and put them in our pockets. But some stones, regardless of whether they are boring or brilliant, have other secrets buried inside them. There are veins of gold deep under the Earth, geodes that hide remarkable crystal explosions, and diamonds that are stuck for ages in layers of crusty rugged rock until someone breaks them free. But there are still more secrets to find. Even within diamonds because few diamonds are perfect. Most have some kind of imperfection. There are cracks, clouds, nicks, needles, pits, scratches, fractures, feathers, and fingerprints. But by far the most common imperfections are tiny pinpoint inclusions. These insignificant mineral deposits often go unnoticed because they appear to be a single sparkling light in the midst of millions of similar sparks of light. They are, in fact, the shadow in the center of everything that appears to be pure.
