"Ethan!"
Aurora called his name, but the boy didn't react. He was breathing faster and sweating more. Aurora started to cry and call his name, desperate, until she felt a presence approaching and she suddenly stopped crying. The girl turned cautiously, trembling.
"I told you that you would come with me. Didn't you want to see your beloved angel? Here he is."
Nathan was on the other side of the small bars of the door, looking at Aurora with those hideous red eyes. His voice from the darkness gave her chills. She knew he was standing with his hands in his pockets even if she couldn't see it. She knew he was having a good time and that he didn't care about the situation.
"What have you done to him?" Aurora's voice was hoarse, full of rage and hatred.
"I would say that the question is: what has he done to me? He has stolen from me what the Lord loves most. But now that I have both of you, I can eliminate him and you... I will make you the most powerful demon in the world," he smiled maliciously.
Aurora didn't dare add anything more. Too many thoughts and questions clouded her head. The demon didn't add anything else either. He laughed and left.
The girl tried to get as close to the bars as she could considering her wrist was handcuffed. Her jeans were soiled with that disgusting floor and her dark green sweater was torn in several places. She was glad, however, to have put on her boots that day. When she had already crawled to the maximum, she saw that she could grab one of the bars with her other hand. It was as close as she could get to Ethan.
She poked at the bars several times, called his name, but it was useless. She dropped her forehead to the bars, her hair falling to the side of her face in surrender. She returned to the place where she had been lying for who knows how long, hugged her knees with the only arm she had free and hid her face between her knees to cry in privacy. Her life had changed a lot since she had known that Ethan was an angel. It had also become very complicated. But she loved him, and for that alone it was worth it. Besides, she still owed him an apology. Suddenly, a faint voice brought her out of her thoughts.
"A... Aurora..."
It was an almost imperceptible whisper, but she would have recognized that voice made of stars anywhere. Aurora lifted her head immediately and looked towards the bars that separated the two cells. Her face was one of absolute surprise. Ethan was regaining consciousness and was staring at her with half-closed eyes.
"Ethan! God, you are so weak, we have to get out of here as soon as possible. You need to see a doctor." She crawled up to the bars until she touched them.
He drew a crooked smile. He had no strength for anything but breathing. But then, suddenly, Aurora's handcuff opened. The arm fell to her side, as if dead. She touched her injured wrist and tried to move it. It hurt, but she was recovering. She eyed the handcuff suspiciously. Then, she heard a "click". The door in the middle of the barred wall that separated the two rooms, locked with a padlock, opened. The padlock fell to the floor with a cold, metallic clank. Aurora didn't understand what was going on. She stood up still massaging her wrist. Her whole body ached, but Ethan was on the other side of the door and she wanted to get closer to him. She made a gigantic effort to cross it. She took a few shy steps towards him, cautiously. Sure, it was a trap, but if she could touch Ethan, she'd fall for it gladly. She crouched down next to him. He was still breathing rapidly, but not as much as he had been for the last minutes.
She placed a hand on his wounded chest to feel his heart. Her warmth gave Ethan some strength. He slowly opened his eyes and turned his head to look at her. Those ocean blue eyes that shone so brightly were sad and without light.
