After the hockey game, I went to a party at one of Billy's friends' houses to celebrate since they won the big game. The party was at Jack's house, they were always crazy and included lots of people, both socs and greasers, plus pounding music and booze.
Parties have really never been my thing, but since Billy's my boyfriend, I kind of had to go to this one. Supporting the team and all that jazz.
Jack's house was huge. It was basically a mansion. It was crowded inside, so crowded that you had to push to get through the masses of people crowding every step. Red solo cups covered every surface. Smoke filled the air, cigarettes in the hands of people in every room.
I wandered around, searching for Billy. He was nowhere to be found. As I walked, I spun around trying to spot him, I bumped into someone's back. I spun around to apologize and saw that it was that Johnny kid who hung out with Dallas.
When he saw it was me, his eyes widened, and he stammered out a sorry before shuffling away.
I suddenly felt very alone. I looked around the crowd for Billy once more. Billy had invited me to go to this party, and he hadn't even picked me up, instead went with his friends, leaving me on my own. He also hadn't even made an effort to come find me, though he had promised he would if I came.
The guy was probably drunk out of his mind anyway. I thought sourly. And my eyes moved back to Johnny.
"Wait!" I blurted out, and Johnny whirled around with an expression I couldn't decipher. "You're Johnny, right?" His eyes dart around the room nervously, before he nods.
"I can't find my boyfriend and uh... parties are not my thing. Plus, I don't know many people here." I suddenly felt much more self-conscious. "Is it okay if maybe I hang out with you?"
"Uh-uhm... s-sure?" Johnny stammers, looking nervous.
"Was that a question or an answer?" I joke, and I see his face darken through the flashing party lights.
He smiles, looking down at his feet. "You wanna go somewhere more quiet?" He says. I nod.
Johnny leads me up the stairs and onto the balcony of the huge house. As we step through the doors, the pounding music and lights change to a dull throb of muffled music.
We both walk to the edge of the balcony and lean against it, our elbows centimeters away from touching- and look up at the stars. I sigh, happy to be out of that stuffy party. I gaze up at the sprinkle of stars in the pool of darkness that is the sky and smile slightly, feeling at peace.
"Real pretty ain't it," Johnny says quietly.
"Yeah. It is." I murmur, and I turn to look at him. His face glows in the moonlight, his dark eyes alight with all the stars in the sky. He's really pretty too, I think. Johnny turns his face towards me, and the corner of his mouth curls up into a tiny smile.
"Do I got dirt on my face or somethin'?" He quips. I blush at being caught staring, but don't move to turn away.
"No, nothing like that." I say quietly, staring into his eyes. He's blushing now too, and we both look away quickly. I clear my throat.
"What's your favorite color?" I blurt out randomly, turning to look at him once more.
"W-what?" He says, caught off guard.
"What's your favorite color?" I repeat, demanding him to answer me.
"Well, uh- that's a tricky question.." He pauses and thinks for a second, "Gold."
"Why Gold?"
"It reminds me of a poem my friend Pony told me."
"Oh?" I questioned, cocking my head to one side. "I wouldn't strike you guys as the poetic type." I tease.
"Why, because we're greasers?" He responds, cocking his head to mirror me. I feel a small pang of guilt.
"Sorry, I didn't mean it like that, I just-"
"It's alright. You ain't exactly wrong, Pony is the poetic one, I just like listening."
"That's... nice. Pony seems like a cool guy."
"He is. I bet you'd like him."
"Can I hear the poem?"
"Hm?"
"The poem you said that reminds you of gold, can I maybe hear it?"
"Uh, yeah, sure. I might not get it entirely right though, so don't make fun of me alright?"
"Alright." I giggle."
"Well, here goes nothin'...
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay."
"That was really pretty," I say quietly, looking into his eyes once more. God those eyes, a girl could really get lost in them you know?
"Ya think?" He asks, and I notice how we are closer than before.
"Yeah," I whisper, "maybe you're more poetic than you think." We are really close now, a bit too close, and I find my eyes flickering down to Johnny's lips. I think briefly about what it would be like to kiss those lips- I bet it would be better than Billy-
Oh my god- Billy!
I jump away from Johnny, breathing a little heavy and feeling flushed.
"I'm uhm- I'm so sorry I-" Johnny stammers.
"No- no you're fine, seriously it was my fault!" I make a motion with my hands to the door. "I should uh- I should go." I say quickly and walk stiffly to the door of the balcony. Before I walk back into the party, I look behind me to face the sheepish boy before me and smile softly. "Thanks- for- y'know, bringing me out here. I really needed it."
Johnny smiles back and nods, and I slip through the doors, leaving the peaceful starry sky behind me to enter the house with the pounding music and lights once more.
