Layla carried a big azure box with a crimson ribbon in her hands, slowly treading towards the mansion. Her aegean eyes darted from place to place, looking for Adam.
"You need help with that, ma'am?" A dashing man with carob colored eyes walked up to her.
"Yes, please." Layla replied, handing him the blue box.
"I'm Tyler, by the way. You look gorgeous." Tyler said.
"Thank you." Layla batted her eyelashes.
"Did you have a nice trip?" Tyler asked, his gaze drifting lower.
"I did, thanks for asking."
Tyler opened his mouth to speak when Adam stepped outside. "Layla!"
"Adam!" Layla yelled, rushing towards him.
"Hi, baby." He murmured, holding her face with his hands. Layla leaned forward and pecked his lips.
"Happy birthday." She whispered, laying her hands flat on his chest.
"I missed you." Adam smiled genuinely for what felt like the first time that day.
"I missed you too."
"I have a surprise for you."
"For me? On your birthday?" Adam nodded. "Oh my god, what is it?"
Adam was about to say something when Scarlett stepped out of the car. "Happy birthday, Uncle AK!"
"Hey! Where's my hug?" Adam held his arms open for Scarlett as she walked towards him and hugged him. "Don't they teach you manners at your overpriced private school?"
"You know I love you, uncle. And this castle is so beautiful!"
Adam snickered. "Wait. Before you get too excited, there's no WiFi here–"
"What?" Scarlett shrieked.
"-and there's no signal, either. And no setting up your own connection. You're off the grid."
"That's so boring." Scarlett rolled her taupe eyes and stomped inside.
Great. Now she couldn't call her girlfriend.
Alyssa's gonna be worried sick.
But she could at least try to call.

"Come on, tell me, what's the surprise?" Layla asked, as soon as Scarlett disappeared inside, attempting to call her friend Alyssa without internet. "Tell me, tell me tell m-"
"Okay, okay, I'll tell you." Adam laughed. "The surprise..." Adam drew out the last syllable for as long as he could.
"Just tell me already!"
"...is in your bedroom."
"In my bedroom? I have a separate bedroom? You're keeping me away from you on your birthday?" Layla pouted.
"It's my birthday, I've planned something. Trust me." Adam leaned his forehead against Layla's. "You'll like it."
