It keeps happening

It had been about 3 weeks since I had gone to that party with Alicia and since I talked to Jay. I mean, I purposely left the conversation where it was because there was nothing more to come from it. Besides, I wasn't interested and he had a woman. Don't get me wrong, he was handsome and it was nice to see an old friend after more than 10 years but that was about it.

I was hanging out at Alicia's house and we were trying to decide if we were going to attend Jen's birthday celebration that night at The Karaoke. It was the perfect spot for group events. Jen had booked a room for us to have a karaoke session inside and eat. It's a small group of us and we always celebrated everyone's birthday every year.

Alicia: Deja, I don't even know what to wear.

Me: The way your closet is set up-

Alicia: Aht! Don't even start! Ha ha!

Me: I'm just saying...you have plenty to wear. I would say wear that all black two piece with the back out.

Alicia: Mmmm..you know what? That doesn't sound like a bad idea. I'm going for cute and comfortable anyway.

Me: I think I'm going for a knee length bodycon dress. I'm not sure what color though. 🤔

Alicia: All black?

Me: Mmmm...nope. I get tired of all black. Maybe olive green.

Alicia: Oh yes ma'am! That color really compliments you.

Me: You're right! Thank you sis! Let's just go! We don't have anything else to do tonight.

Alicia: I'm with it.

I went home to get myself together. I didn't have much to do to my hair because I had recently retwisted my locks. After my shower, I put my hair in a high bun and proceeded to apply my make up and get dressed.

I decided to go light and natural with my make up. I applied my favorite lip combo: chestnut brown lip liner with a nude lipstick topped with a gloss. For my dress I stuck with the olive green bodycon dress. For my shoes I went with my nude heels. I put on all gold accessories and a gold and clear clutch for my purse.

Before I walked out the door, I stood in front of my full length mirror and took a look at myself making sure everything was right. For some reason I was feeling really good. I was feeling light. I heard my phone beep a couple of times but I ignored it because I knew I would check it after I got in my car.

As I let my car warm up, I checked my messages. I texted Alicia and let her know I was on my way to her house. I scrolled through my notifications and skipped the majority of my messages because they were all small talk. I'm not a fan of small talk.

I continued to scroll until I noticed a message from Jay. He had sent me a message about an hour prior and I didn't realize it because I was busy getting dressed for the night. I was surprised to hear from him because I left him on "seen" almost a month ago.

"Oh wow" I said out loud.

I opened the message.

Jay: Dejaaaaa how you been fam?

I made a mental note to respond after I got to my destination. Even though I wasn't looking for a relationship, I wasn't a rude person. I wasn't going to ignore him. Maybe he won't see that I left him on "seen" before I make it to The Karaoke.

I was driving to The Karaoke when my phone started to ring. It was my mom calling. I answered.

Me: Hey mom! What's going on?

Mom: Hey sweetie. You doing alright?

Me: Yes ma'am. How are you? Is everything okay?

Mom: Yes baby girl everything is fine. I'm ok. I was just calling to check on you.
