Chapter 23

Flashback to the 900s.
Bella: [voiceover] Once a month our family retreated into the caves beneath our village. The wolves would howl through the night and by morning we'd return home...
[We can see Bella looking at different sorts of necklaces/talismans hanging on a rope in Ayana's window. She touches one (Esther's necklace) and it burns her fingers.]
Bella: Ayana, you burned me!
Ayana: That is not yours to touch.
Klaus: (Screaming outside.) Mother!!!
Bella: [to Ayana] Is that Niklaus? Something is wrong. [Klaus is carrying the dead body of his little brother Henrik.]
Mikaelsons look sad.
Bella: Henrik!
Klaus: Mother!!!
Bella: [voiceover] One full moon, Klaus and my youngest brother Henrik snuck out to watch the men turn into wolves. That was forbidden. Henrik paid the price...
Klaus looked down. Bella grabbed his hand.
"It was not your fault." Said Bella. Klaus doesn't look up.
Esther: No, no!! What happened?
Klaus: The wolves! I am sorry, I'm so sorry!
"Not your fault." Said Bella to Klaus.
Esther: [to Ayana] We must save him. Please, there must be a way!
Ayana: The spirits will not give us a way, Esther. Your boy is gone.
Esther: No! No!!! [clutches Henrik's body.]
Bella: And that was the beginning of the end of peace with our neighbors..
[Back in Stefan's room.]
Bella: And one of the last moments my family had together as humans. [Elena's phone vibrates, snapping them out of Bella's memories.]
Bella: You better get that. That'll be Damon checking up on you. [Elena answers her phone.]
Elena: Hello?
Damon: Hey!
Elena: Damon, where are you? [Damon is in a bar where music is playing loudly.]
Damon: No idea, but I'm pretty sure I'm overdressed... Still standing?
Elena: Yes, I'm fine, but I can't talk right now.
Stefan: I'll be at the bar.
Elena: [hears his voice] Is that Stefan?Damon: Yeah, I kinda went off a bit. Don't worry. I know what I'm doing.
Elena: Damon! How could you let him out?
Salvatore Boarding House
[Bella is lying on the bed, going through one of Stefan's diaries.]
Elena: Did you get your fill of snooping yet? Can we get on with the story? [Bella gets up; she picks up a photo of Elena and Stefan from a table.]
Bella: Honestly, I don't get you two as a couple.
Elena: Why would you? You don't know anything about who he really is.
Bella: I know exactly who he is. He's a vampire. We're a predatory species. [leans close to Elena's face] We don't have time to care about humans and their silly little lives.
Elena: Is that why you did that runway show earlier? 'Cause you don't care about the Homecoming Dance...You know what, I'm just gonna go. [She gets up. Bella runs at her and grabs her by throat.]
Bella: You think you can order me around little girl? I'm Bellatrix motherfucking Mikaelson. The Original heretic. I'm not your boytoys. You don't want to hear? Fuck off. [Bella let's her go and Elena drops on the floor.]
"I love you." Said Layla. Bella laughed.
Elena: Tell me. Please.
Bella: Better. The necklace wasn't Stefan's to give. It belonged to the Original Witch.
Elena: [turns around] The one who put the hybrid curse on Klaus?
Bella: Not just the hybrid curse. She's the one who turned us into vampires.
[Flashback to the 900s; Mikael, Esther and Ayana are standing in a room lit by a fire and torches.]
Mikael: Please, Ayana! I implore you! You must call upon the spirits before the next full moon.
Ayana: I will not! It is a crime against nature.
Esther: Ayana, we have already lost too much. We cannot lose any more...The spirits can help us find a way to protect our children. [Bella is eavesdropping from the next room.]
[Back in Stefan's room.]
Bella: I'm thirsty. Do you want a drink?
[She goes down to the library with Elena following behind her.]
Elena: So, vampirism was a form of protection?
Bella: What else would it be?
Elena: A curse?
Bella: They only saw a way of keeping their children alive.
Elena: Yeah, but why stay, if they were so afraid of the werewolves? Why not...leave?
Bella: Pride... Mikael didn't want to run anymore. He wanted to fight and be superior to the wolves. Where they could bite, we had to bite harder. Where they had speed, we had to be faster. Agility, strength, senses... [Flashback to 900s; Mikael, Esther and Ayana continue talking in their home.]
Mikael: Everything could be heightened. Our family could live forever...
Ayana: At what cost? This magic you speak of breeds consequence. This is the makings of a plague, Esther. The spirits will turn on you.
Esther: Please, Ayana.
Ayana: I will have no part in it. [Ayana leaves the home. Mikael closes the door and speaks to Esther.]
Mikael: If she will not protect our family... then it is in your hands alone, my love.
[Back to Elena and Bella.]
Elena: In her hands? How could she do anything?
"She is really slow, isn't she?" Said Layla.
"Yep." Said Bella.
Bella: Because my mother was also a witch.
Elena: What?
Bella: The witch of the Original Family. The Original Witch? [They enter the library.]
Bella: [searching through shelves] Where do they keep their best vintage?
Elena: But if your mother was a witch, then...
Bella: A witch is nature's servant; a vampire is an abomination of nature. You can either be one or the other, never both. My mother did this for us. She did not turn.
Bella grabbed Kol's hand ressuringly. Kol smiled.
Elena: But you are both.
Bella: I'm different. Nik isn't the only bastard in the family. My mother slept with man from Gemini coven. In that coven sometimes babies are born without magic, but they have ability to siphon from others. When i turned into a vampire, I didn't lose magic, because I didn't have it. Mother didn't realise it. Neither did i for a while. People like me-Siphoners were very rare, they were born once in few centuries.
Elena: Were?
Bella: They are all dead. I killed whole coven. (Heretics which showed up in vampire diaries are dead too since they were born after this. Sorry.)
FLASHBACK-1719 -CANADA
[Layla is in her room, panicking when Bella opens the door.]
Layla: Mom... Mom, what is happening to me? [Bella walked toward Layla.]
Bella looked down.
Bella: Shh. It's okay. You are in transition.
Layla: What?! How?
"She didn't know how you turn?" Asked Davina.
"I did. I just died in my sleep so i didn't know i died." Said Layla. Davina looked confused.
Bella: Your father. He found us and wanted to kill you. I killed him, but i didn't know he was coven leader or killing him would kill whole coven. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I never wanted to hurt you. [Bella's eyes were filled with tears.]
Layla smiled at Bella reasurringly.
Layla: So i am a heretic?
Bella: If you want to.
Layla: Of course i do. I have been asking you for years.
Bella: It's important decision. Are you sure?
Layla: Yes. [Bella smiles.]
Bella: Then it's time for how to be a vampire lessons. [Layla smiled exitedly.]
"She was a natural. She did compulsion on her first try and was able to stop drinking on second." Said Bella proudly.
"Impressive." Said Elijah.
"Thanks." Said Layla.
"How old were you?" Asked Davina.
"22." Said Layla.
Salvatore Boarding House‐Present
Elena: How did you turn?
Bella: Mother called upon the sun for life, and the ancient white oak tree, one of nature's eternal objects, for immortality. That night, my father offered us wine laced with blood. And then he drove his sword through our hearts.
Elena: [stunned, whispering] He killed you?
Bella: And he wasn't delicate about it either. [She takes a bottle of wine, breaks its neck off with one motion of her hand and throws it into the fireplace.]
[Back to the 900s; shortly after Mikael turned the children into vampires; Bella and Klaus awaken on the floor with blood on their clothes.]
Klaus: [waking] Bella...
Bella: (gasping) Blood! What happened? [touches her nightgown where she had been stabbed.]
Klaus: You will be alright! We will all be alright.
Bella: Where is Kol?
Kol smiled at her.
[Mikael enters with a girl.]
Klaus: [confused and scared] What are you doing?
Mikael: We must finish what we started! [pushes the village girl onto her knees in front of them] You have to drink if you want to live. [he cuts the girl's wrist open.]
Bella (voiceover): We had to drink more blood to complete the ritual.
Mikael (to Bella): Drink! [she hesitates] Drink! [Klaus tries to stop him, but Mikael pushes him aside; Bella starts to drink the girl's blood.]
Mikael: Drink!!! [she drinks deeply, and dark veins appear around her eyes.]
Everyone glares at Mikael.
Bella (to Elena): It was euphoric! The feeling of power was indescribable...but the witch Ayana was right about the consequences. The spirits turned on us, and nature fought back... For every strength there would be a weakness...[Bella is seen in flashback being burned by sunlight through the window]
Bella: The sun became our enemy. It kept us indoors for weeks... [Bella is seen walking around outside during the day, glancing at her daylight ring.]
Bella: And though my mother found a solution, there were other problems... [Villagers are seen running into their homes at the sight of Bella coming toward them]
Bella: Neighbors who had opened their homes to us could now keep us out.
[Bella is seen touching a vervain plant and getting burned by it]
Bella: Flowers at the base of the white oak burned, and prevented compulsion. And the spell decreed that the tree that gave us life could also take it away... so we burned it to the ground. [The huge tree is seen enveloped in flames, as Mikael, Elijah, Bella and Klaus watch]
Bella: But the darkest consequence was something my parents never anticipated... [Villagers are seen carrying a slaughtered pig tied to a rod to be spit-roasted]
Bella: The hunger. Blood... had made us reborn and it was blood that we craved above all else. We could not control it... [Bella is seen staring at the villagers; she gasps and tries to resist, but then vamps out and hurries to them and kills them by feeding on them.]
Bella: And with that, the predatory species was born...
"I can't believe i just watched how vampires were created." Said Davina. Marcel nodded.
"I have already seen it. Bella showed me." Said Layla.
