Chapter 2: Shades of change

Lauri couldn't help but feel a pang of loneliness as she entered their new home. The walls were different, the decorations unfamiliar, and the scent of fresh mushrooms filled the air, all serving as stark reminders of the change she had been thrust into. The absence of her mother's comforting presence was particularly painful.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she walked through the rooms, memories of her mom flooding her mind. She missed her guidance, her laughter, and the way she used to magically light up their old house. Lauri wished her mom were there to make this transition easier, to ease her into the new life that lay ahead.

As Lauri surveyed her new surroundings, Demetri approached her from behind, gently resting a hand on her shoulder. "I know this transition is challenging, but I assure you, you'll find your place here," he said, a genuine smile on his face. However, in his eyes, Lauri detected a hint of the same difficulty she herself was experiencing. Managing a faint smile, she knew she had to make an effort, if not for herself, then for her father – the only family she had left.

Breaking the silence, Demetri asked, "So, have you found your bedroom yet?" Lauri shook her head. "I haven't seen everything yet."

Grinning, Demetri suggested, "I thought the attic would be a perfect spot for you. But before you check it out, I have something to show you." Leading her to the backyard, Lauri couldn't believe her eyes. Her father had crafted a covered spot with a swing bench adorned with pillows and cozy lights. Plants cascaded down from the sides, and roses adorned the top. "Tadaa!" Demetri exclaimed proudly. Lauri's eyes welled up. "You made this for me?"

Demetri hugged her tightly. "I wanted you to feel at home. I know it'll take time, but I hope this makes up for it." Lauri embraced her dad, grateful for the effort he had put into creating a space just for her. Reading was her solace, and this spot would be perfect for it. As Demetri excused himself to help the moving trolls, he placed a kiss on her head. Lauri waved, eager to explore the attic – her new bedroom.

Entering the room, she found it just right – not too small, not too big. The plain walls were a canvas waiting for her colorful touch. Lauri envisioned brightful colors transforming the space. A large window faced the neighbors' home, and she discovered she could easily climb onto the roof. Grinning at the thought, she remembered how her dad knew she used to climb the roof when upset or needing time alone.

Lauri opened her bag, finding a few belongings already in the room. The only thing it needed now was some "Lauri-ness." She pulled out her magic book, a teddy bear from her grandma, and her diary. Placing the diary under her pillow, the magic book under her bed, Lauri hugged the teddy bear tightly. She sighed, contemplating the school starting tomorrow – New Mushroomton High School.

Despite being 19 and expected to be in college, her mother's death had interrupted her education. Lauri couldn't bring herself to face school, consumed by grief and the desperate search for a magical solution. Her dad had tried to encourage her to at least get her diploma, but she couldn't find the strength. The thought of being the new kid, the odd one out, haunted her.

Closing her eyes, Lauri drifted into a deep sleep, hoping that tomorrow would bring a new day, a new start, and perhaps the strength to face the challenges ahead.
