The next morning, Lauri woke up with a sense of anticipation, the echoes of her magical evening still lingering in her mind. She dressed for the day, a mix of excitement and nervousness bubbling within her as she prepared to face the bustling halls of New Mushroomton High.

As Lauri entered the school courtyard, she spotted Ian Lightfoot by his locker. With a shy smile, she approached him. "Hey, Ian, good morning!"

Ian looked up, his eyes reflecting a reserved but friendly demeanor. "Morning, Lauri. How's it going?"

Lauri fidgeted with the strap of her backpack, feeling a surge of nerves. "It's going well. Your brother showed me around last night. New Mushroomton is truly magical."

Ian's face lit up at the mention of Barley. "Barley does have a way of making things magical. Glad you enjoyed it."

As they walked together to their first class, the conversation turned to magic. Lauri couldn't help but be drawn to Ian's mystical abilities, and a curiosity ignited within her.

"I've always been fascinated by magic," Lauri admitted, her eyes sparkling with intrigue. "Your brother mentioned you're pretty skilled."

Ian blushed modestly, "Oh, well, I've been practicing. Magic is amazing, you know? It connects us to a world beyond the ordinary."

Lauri hesitated, a weight on her shoulders. She wanted to share her own magical abilities with Ian, but the memory of what happened to Demetri held her back.

"Have you ever encountered someone with magic who didn't use a wand?" Lauri asked, her tone carefully chosen.

Ian tilted his head, contemplating the question. "Not really. Most magic users here rely on wands. Why do you ask?"

Lauri bit her lip, uncertainty clouding her expression. "I... I have a connection to magic too, but it's different. I don't use a wand. It's more, um, hands-on, you could say."

Ian's eyes widened with intrigue. "That sounds incredible! You're like a hands-on sorcerer? That's so rare!"

A mixture of relief and excitement surged through Lauri. Ian's reaction was positive, yet she still hesitated to reveal the full extent of her abilities. The memory of Demetri's accident lingered, creating a barrier she wasn't sure how to overcome.

As they reached their first class, Ian turned to Lauri. "You should really talk about this with Barley, he knows alot about magic."

Lauri forced a smile, masking her inner turmoil. "Maybe, Ian. Thanks for the suggestion."

As they entered the classroom, Lauri couldn't shake the feeling that her magical secret might not stay hidden for long, especially with Ian's genuine curiosity.
