School went surprisingly well for Lauri. Despite a few curious glances and hushed whispers of "Who is that?" here and there, she seamlessly blended into her new environment. The weight of being the new kid lifted off her shoulders, and even the classes turned out to be interesting. Funnily enough, she discovered that she shared a magic class with Ian, the reserved elf she had met in the morning. His magical abilities were nothing short of captivating, and Lauri found herself mesmerized by the artistry of his spells.

As she strolled back home, Lauri couldn't shake the thought of Ian's magical powers. An idea crossed her mind—what if he could help her understand and control her own magic? But the fear of unintentionally causing harm held her back. The haunting possibility of hurting her dad again was too much to bear.

Lost in contemplation, Lauri was interrupted by the familiar sound of a car with loud music approaching. It was Barley, the same elf she had encountered in the morning. With screeching tires, the car came to a halt before her.

"Good day, fair maiden. Art thou walking home alone?" Barley greeted her with a mischievous grin.

Lauri, a bit flustered, replied, "Yeah, I am. Sorry, I was lost in thought."

"Well, we're heading the same way, neighbor," Barley winked. "Hop on in; I'll give you a ride."

"That's okay," Lauri hesitated. "I don't mind walking."

Undeterred, Barley hopped out of his car and opened the passenger door. "I insist, hop in, m'lady," he said with a theatrical gesture. Lauri couldn't help but smile at his playful charm and accepted the offer, stepping into the car.

Inside, she noticed a chaotic scene with parking tickets scattered everywhere and empty bags from Burger Shire. Barley struggled a bit to start the car. "Come on, girl. You got this, Guin," he whispered to the car.

"Guin?" Lauri inquired.

"Yeah, the lovely lady you are sitting in is called Guinevere. Well, actually Guinevere 2. Rest in peace, Guinevere 1..."

"Oh no, what happened?" Lauri asked sympathetically.

Barley, successful in starting the car, exclaimed, "Ah! I knew you could do it, girl!" As they drove off with screeching tires, he began recounting the tale of their adventurous journey involving their dad, the Phoenix Gem, and the exploits of him and Ian. Lauri listened in amazement.

"Wow, that is quite an adventure. You guys must be really brave," Lauri remarked with admiration.

"Nah, just two brothers with a mission!" Barley proudly declared. As they reached Cinder Lane, Barley stopped the car in front of Lauri's home. He hopped out and promptly opened the door for her before she could even step out.

"M'lady, you have arrived home," Barley announced with a flourish.

Lauri smiled and stepped out of the car. "Thanks, Barley. I appreciate it."

"No problem! That's what neighbors are for, right?" Barley grinned. Lauri felt a slight pang when he said "neighbors." Was it just friendship she longed for, or perhaps something more? Shaking off the thought, she smiled at Barley and walked towards her door. As she glanced back, Barley slammed the car door shut with a flourish. Lauri chuckled and entered her home, closing the door behind her.
