The door to Lauri's new home creaked open, and she entered with a glow that seemed to emanate from the moonlit night. Demetri, sitting in the living room, looked up from his book, sensing something different about his daughter.
"Lauri, where have you been? You look... happy," he remarked, his brows furrowed in curiosity.
Lauri's cheeks flushed with a rosy hue as she closed the door behind her. She couldn't contain the smile that played on her lips. "Dad, I had the most incredible night. Barley Lightfoot, our next-door neighbor, showed me around New Mushroomton. It was so much fun."
Demetri set aside his book, his interest piqued. "Barley Lightfoot, huh? I met Officer Bronco earlier. He mentioned Barley is a bit of a screw-up."
Lauri sighed, her smile fading slightly. "Dad, that's not fair. Barley has had his struggles, but he's not a screw-up. He's been through a lot, especially after his adventure with Ian. He's changed."
Demetri raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "Changed? I hope so. I just want you to be careful, Lauri. We've been through a lot, and I don't want to see you hurt."
Lauri approached her dad and sat beside him. "Dad, I understand your concern, but Barley is different. He's been through hardships, just like us. He's kind, adventurous, and tonight, he showed me a side of this town I never imagined. I finally found a friend, Dad, someone I can connect with. Please trust me on this."
Demetri looked into Lauri's earnest eyes and saw a spark of determination. After a moment of silence, he sighed and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Alright, Lauri. I trust your judgment. Just be careful, okay? We're in a new place, and I don't want anything bad happening to you."
Lauri hugged her dad, grateful for his understanding. "Thank you, Dad. I promise to be careful. Barley is a good person, and I'm happy to have him as a friend."
Lauri sighed. Friend... I mean, was that all she wanted? Or... Was there more to add? She nodded her head quickly, shaking away the thought. Having a friend is nice, no need to make it difficult already...Lauri climbed the stairs to her bedroom, a gentle excitement still lingering from the enchanting night with Barley. The moonlight filtered through her window, casting a soft glow on the room. She changed into her pajamas, the events of the evening replaying in her mind like a cherished movie.
With a contented sigh, Lauri settled into her bed, surrounded by the familiar comfort of her belongings. As she pulled the covers over herself, her thoughts couldn't help but gravitate back to Barley—his infectious energy, the laughter they shared, and the way he made her feel at ease in this new town.
Just as she was about to close her eyes, her phone buzzed softly on the bedside table. Lauri picked it up, and her heart skipped a beat when she saw Barley's name on the screen. The message read, "Goodnight, Lauri! xx."
A warm smile spread across Lauri's face as she typed a quick reply, "Goodnight, Barley! Thanks for the amazing night. Sleep well! xx."
With a satisfied sigh, Lauri placed her phone back on the table and settled into her pillow. The room was filled with a gentle quiet, interrupted only by the soft whispers of the night. Lauri closed her eyes, the glow of her phone casting a dim light in the room, and allowed herself to drift into a peaceful slumber.
