"No. No, I don't expect you to speak for Billy. I just want you to speak for yourself. If you tell me now that you're okay with this... with your widowed daughter-in-law moving on with her best friend... then I'll give you a hug and say thank you. If you tell me now that you're not okay with this, I'll still give you a hug and say thank you. Because I owe Freen an explanation. A conversation where we try to decide once and for all what we want to be to one another, and until then until I hear her side of things too, I won't be making a decision... I just... I need to know what you think." Becky said.
"Well, of course I'm not going to tell you you shouldn't get to experience love again, Becky. You're young. Billy would have wanted you to find happiness too..." Sara said.
"I know that. It's just... when Freen's name is brought up in the equation, it tends to become a more complicated situation." Becky admitted. Sara nodded.
Sara then came back to the couch and sat beside Becky and took her hand in hers. She seemed pensive.
"I still remember the first year after you and Billy got together, three of you would have sleepovers here..."
Becky listened intently, because she remembered that sleepovers too. And she watched as Sara smiled at the memory she was having.
"Oh I loved seen all of you, be so excited through the week, at the idea of having this sleepover-weekend every alternate week..."
Becky laughed.
"I remember that one day when you're in America with your cousin. Freen got here alone, and I noticed that she looked so sad. I tried asking her what happened, but she wouldn't tell me. Soon enough, she was distracted, and Billy was good at keeping her entertained. That evening I was making chocolate chip cookies..."
"Billy's favourite," Becky said, smiling.
"Yep, and you know how Billy is with them, he doesn't like to share them..." Sara said.
Becky laughed. Oh she knew.
Back in the day when they had just started dating, she once picked 1 out of 3 cookies that Billy had put into a plate for himself at tea time, and bit into it, and when Billy turned to find his plate had 2 in it and that 1 was in Becky's mouth, he was enraged.
He didn't talk to Becky for hours, Becky could never forget how much it took to convince Billy she'd never do that again. And she never did after that. She had learned her lesson that day. Don't mess with Billy's share of cookies.
"Freen had disappeared to the bathroom while I plated them 2 cookies each, and I turned to pour them 2 glasses of milk. And when I returned and placed the glasses of milk beside their plates, I noticed, that Billy's plate now had 1 and Freen's had 3."
"You're kidding me?" Becky said, looking at Sara shocked.
"Billy?" Sara had asked her son, suspiciously.
"She deserves more cookies today. She's sad, Mae..." Billy had said.
"You don't give me extra cookies when I'm sad.." Sara had argued with her son, just wanting to nudge him.
"You're not nong Freen!" Billy had said, so simply.
Becky laughed now as Sara tried to mimic Billy's tone.
They stayed silent then, relishing the memory of sweet, sweet Billy.
"Listen Becky, honey. The story could be completely inconsequential, it could mean nothing now, years later, but I do know, and I've seen with my own eyes how Freen's friendship meant the world to Billy. He would often go out of his way to be there for Freen, and I'm sure Freen did the same for Billy... The two of them knew each other on a level I never understood. And you brought that to him... you and Freen... both of you gave him a beautiful family than anyone could ever had.."
