Alexander was sitting behind his desk. He should've been working on paperwork but instead he had his left hand on his forehead and groaned. He still wasn't sure what to do with Nicki and the child but he had created this mess himself. The memory of that night kept replaying in his head.
That night. That stupid night. When he got drunk. Alexander was always in control. Always. But the alcohol had hit him stronger than expected that night. It had been late and she had entered his office to give him a report. He had been staring at her lips instead of making eye contact as usual. He had offered her a drink as she gave him the report. And another. And another. He didn't know how she felt about him. She hadn't been the same since he had turned her. But honestly, he hadn't been the same either since he became immortal. The report turned into a conversation. Nothing in particular. Just the nitty and the gritty. The more they talked, the more alcohol got consumed. Soon enough they needed a new bottle. Alexander hadn't counted how much they had drank. A servant kept replacing the bottles for them and quickly left them alone, unless called for, sensing that tonight was an intimate moment between the two of them.
Alexander didn't know how it happened but suddenly he had pinned her against the wall. He was kissing her. She resisted for only a second. A hand on his chest. A reflex to push her enemy off her but it weakened. She grabbed the fabric instead, pulling him closer. She kissed him back. Suddenly her legs were around his waist. The next moment they were in his bedroom. Alexander couldn't remember if he had walked past his guards with her tangled around him. Maybe he had used a secret passage. He truly didn't know. They ended up in his bed. Clothes had fallen on the floor. Mortals compared them to the devil but that night she had been an angel to him.
He had woken up at sunset, as usual. His bedsheets were ripped. She had still been there. Asleep. Looking angelic. Her face was relaxed for once. She looked cute. Almost innocent. It had been a long time since he had seen her like this. She looked like the mortal girl she had once been. The mortal girl that had captured his heart. The mortal girl who had loved him back until the day she died and became immortal. The day that he had ruined everything they could've had. Now she was his spy instead of the queen he wanted her to be.
Alexander had quietly crawled out of his bed and gotten dressed. He tucked her in and left the room as if nothing had happened. He wouldn't talk about it if she didn't ask questions. Pretending as if nothing had happened to spare her humiliation. His head head been pounding that night because he was hungover and he would've preferred to stay in bed a bit longer but he had known that it was better like this.
He had his cup of blood delivered to his office and did some paperwork until Nicki came in. She had acted as if nothing had happened. Alexander had done the same.
"I need you on the battlefield. Try to get some intel about the rebels." He had handed her a file. "This has everything you need. If you have any questions, I would like to hear them before you leave."
Nicki had taken the file and quickly read it. She had handed it back to him, bowed and looked him emotionless in the eye. No love or embarrassment was to be found. "Yes, master. It might take me a few weeks but I'll get your intel."
She left, as usual. But instead of returning within a few weeks, she stayed away for nearly 2 months. Something had happened. He had known that. He had wondered if something made her lose her calm. If she had been in a tricky situation. There had been no trace of her until the night of her return. The night that she had announced that she was with child.
