I was the first one off the elevator once it reached the bottom floor. I saw my family sitting around a table in front of the lobby, eating breakfast.
I pulled up a seat, "Hey guys, glad you waited for me." I said sarcastically, smiling.
"Hey." Mom greeted, smiling at me.
"Morning." Stan added.
Ricky rolled his eyes, "Well you were taking forever!" he whined, "We were going to wait for you but...." He drifted off with the thought, his attention turning back to his pancakes.
I looked across the table at Mom and Stan, who were smiling and looking into each others eyes. I cleared my throat, and they jumped.
"Any plans for today, you guys?" I asked.
My mom nodded excitedly, "We're going to Disneyland! On the way back, we might stop for dinner at a really nice Mexican restaurant that Stan suggested." My mom was grinning. She had never actually been on nice vacations when my dad was around, years ago; so this was new and exciting for all of us.
"Cool! So what time do you guys want to meet up to go?" I asked.
"Around 10:30, I guess." Stan answered me.
"Okay, I think I'll grab a bagel or something. I want to check out the beach before we leave. Have you guys already been?"
Ricky looked up from his food with a slightly guilty expression, and nodded.
"We were going to wait, honest Sissy!" He exclaimed earnestly.
"Its okay dude, I'm just glad you got to see it." I smiled and he returned it. It was good to see him smiling and eating. I knew that even being the youngest that he was still stressed out a lot. Seeing my mom and I stressed made him stressed as well. When he was stressed he didn't eat. Stan helped relieve some of that stress off my mom and I, which I was glad of. We all needed a vacation, and Stan knew that. So vacation we got.
I hugged my family goodbye and started to walk towards the street. I walked a little bit before I came to a little bagel bakery. I ordered my beagle, and as soon as I handed the money over the counter to the cashier, I heard the door of the shop open and then slam shut with the bells attached to the door handle ringing loudly. People laughed behind me, people who sounded like guys. I finished paying and turned around to head out the door. The guys that had been in the hallway stopped shoving at each other and stood silently behind me, looking at me. I stopped. This day was getting weirder and weirder.
I walked out to the shop as fast as I could. Which was pretty fast considering I am 5'8" and all leg. People tell me I'm lucky for being tall, but I think I would much rather be a little more average sized, or even maybe a little bit more on the short side.
I walked about a block before I hit the sandline. The beach was deserted, both from the time of day and the location. The sand was white, and the water was a pretty turquoise with the early morning sun glinting off it . I slipped off my shoes and threw away the wrapper of my bagel. Carrying my shoes, I walked the waterline. The sand was hot and the water was warm. I walked a ways looking for shells and looking out at the water as the sun rose higher and higher in the light blue sky. I spotted dolphins way out in the distance, got to love this 20/20 vision, right?
I took a deep breath, smelling the salty air. I was glad I was here alone, I hadn't been this calm in weeks. My life was constantly disturbed with my little brother's bipolar illness and my dad's annoying phone calls that I always ignored. All of this and added with a little every-day-life stress and homework, was enough to make you insane. Thankfully, it was February break, so I didn't have a mountain of homework waiting for me when I returned to NH.
My peace was disturbed from shouts behind me. "Hey girl!"
I looked around the deserted beach. Who ever it was had to be talking to me. Thoughts flashed through my mind, 'Murderers.....rapists.....muggers......drug dealers.....gangs.....terrorism.' I walked a little bit faster.
