The shows in Santa Clara had gone as well as any other shows. Taylor always had fun playing No Body, No Crime with HAIM and Aaron Dessner had joined her on stage for her to play Right Where You Left Me on the first night.
But once the shows were over she found she couldn't help but think of the football player as she tried to fall asleep. For the third night in a row, she found herself on safari searching up videos and articles about him. And when she finally forced herself to turn off the light and put away her phone, she felt her mind wander to fictional scenarios that happened to involve him.
And when she woke up in the middle of the night she couldn't shake the thought that she wished he was there with her.
It was insane, she knew that, but couldn't help herself. So she did the one thing that always gave her some perspective: she wrote.
Practically from the time she could hold a pencil, writing had been an escape for her. It started with journal entries and she quickly added poems and songs to the mix. Once she learned to play the guitar, she would spend almost every afternoon practicing chords and forcing her family to watch her performances.
And that night, just like she had done 20 years earlier, she found herself writing lyrics about a boy who had barely acknowledged her existence.
Despite not having a guitar, 30 minutes later she had a new note with practically an entire song worth of lyrics. She knew it wasn't great - most drafts she started at 4AM needed major revisions, but it helped her get her emotions out. And that was enough to let her fall back to sleep.

Not even 12 hours later, on the flight back to LA, she felt her mind wander to Travis. She had yet to receive a response from him.
Although she was grateful for her vivid imagination that propelled her career, she couldn't help but curse it for making her so invested in a relationship that quite literally was only four instagram DM's. So rather than opening the instagram app and staring at their conversation, she went to her messages and clicked on her best friend's name.
T: I need advice
It only took a moment before a little bubble appeared at the bottom of the screen.
Abi: on what?
T: there's this guy
Abi: A GUY??!
Abi: tell me more
T: not much to tell
Abi: clearly theres something or else you wouldnt have texted me
Rather than responding with a message, she sent her friend the clip from the podcast that had started the whole thing. The one that she coincidentally had saved in her phone and had watched an embarrassing amount of times that weekend.
She waited a moment for her best friend to watch it and respond, not caring to explain the situation more.
Abi: oh hes cute
Abi: like really cute
Abi: but what about this video do you need advice on
T: Well I sent him a message on instagram
Abi: oh my god
Abi: one second
Almost immediately, Abigail's contact photo overtook the screen asking to facetime. Knowing that she wouldn't be able to escape her best friends pestering forever, she picked up.
"Heyyy" She said slowly while the redhead popped up on the phone.
"Like I said, tell me everything."
