Mac was completely caught off guard.
"Pinks? Here?" Jenny whispered behind him, wrapping herself even tighter in the bedsheets. There wasn't time for her to dress, and Pinkertons weren't men one should keep waiting. Even she knew that.
"Yeah," Mac whispered. "And I know these two, I think. One of 'em shot me and the other let me live."
"What? You-."
"Mr. Callander!" shouted the man behind the door, in an even angrier voice. "Open up! We have quite a few things to discuss!"
"Look, they're gonna know what we were doin' in here, so just pretend you're a whore and hopefully they won't care."
"Wait," said Jenny, sitting up. "I think I know them too. And if they're who I think they are, they'll have seen my face when they barged into Clemens Cove the day after we burned down Braithwaite Manor. They know I run with Dutch."
"Still," Mac whispered apologetically, "There's not much I can do except open the door sooner rather than later. Just cover yourself up and hopefully they won't stay long."
He felt awkward about it, but there wasn't much he could do. In his heart, he knew it would only be a matter of time until Milton and Ross found him again, but he hadn't figured on it being quite so soon.
He knew both of them, as a matter of fact. Edgar Ross was the man who'd put the second bullet in his side in Blackwater, and Milton was the one who'd decided to let him live.
Mac had not been entirely truthful with anyone since stumbling into Francis' cabin in West Elizabeth, as it turned out. Part of him hoped the two government agents assumed he'd died, and therefore saying something to Arthur, Francis, and the others would only have brought worry to their little group. But as it were, it would seem he'd lost the hand he bet all his chips on, and they'd found him again despite his best efforts.
And not just him. They'd accidentally found Jenny as well. Himself alone was a problem, but now he had injected the woman he loved with all his heart into this dangerous business, and it appeared it had cost him.
He'd put her in danger from two sides. On one stood Dutch and the fact that if he knew Jenny was now mixed up with the Pinkertons, he'd put a bullet in her head and leave her for the vultures. On the other side lay the full might of the combined powers of Leviticus Cornwall and the U.S. government, including its military.
Caught between a rock and a hard place, Mac opened the door.
Surprisingly, it wasn't both men that stood on the other side. Only Edgar Ross stood there in the doorway, grinning nastily at him. "Mr. Callander," Ross laughed. "Nice to meet again. Can I come in?"
"Don't see what choice I have," Mac grunted, stepping to the side to allow him entrance to the hotel room. "Your timing couldn't have been worse."
"I see that," said Ross. "Still, when we get a tip, we have to follow it up sooner rather than later. Our targets have a habit of slipping away otherwise."
