"Wake up, Hummingbird," Eagle Flies whispered to Jenny, nudging her gently with the shoulder she was currently sleeping on. "It's time."
"Mm," Jenny grunted, jerking sleepily awake. She got so little sleep these days that waking up from naps seemed an impossible task. In all reality, this was the best sleep she'd been able to get in a while, and all she wanted was to lie there, safe on Eagle Flies' shoulder, and never wake up again. With him and Paytah to watch after her, she knew she'd be safe.
It was dark now, and the only light came from the full moon hanging precariously in the sky, casting silver shadows on the black water of the river before them.
There was also a bit of a damp chill in the air, and she almost regretted changing into her vest. Almost, but not quite. She'd warm up once she got moving, she supposed. Pity she couldn't keep resting against Eagle Flies, though. His skin was so warm it was almost like a furnace. Not in the same hot, feverish way Arthur's sometimes was, more like a rebellious fire that he couldn't keep contained inside his chest. Eagle Flies' blazing, angry spirit spilled out of his heart and into his veins and arteries, reaching every capillary with fiery, righteous anger.
Or, at least, that's what Jenny liked to pretend.
They were a lot alike in that way, she and Eagle Flies. They both were so filled with anger they couldn't keep it all inside. It drove every single one of their actions and sustained them like no food or drink or even oxygen could.
In truth, Jenny had become so used to the anger these days she couldn't quite remember a time before. She supposed she'd been peaceful once. Less than four months ago, in fact, she'd been relatively happy. She'd had Mac and Davey as friends, and she'd been content with simple, petty crimes and hunting the occasional animal.
But, like everything else these days, the changes all came down to Micah. Besides violently raping her at gunpoint, he was also responsible for the Blackwater job that had upended the lives of the entire gang and left a trail of bodies in its wake. Bodies that would have included hers, if not for that odd Francis Sinclair fellow from the future.
There had been so much death and sadness and grief lately - Jenny still had nightmares of Lenny's bloated, rotten corpse - that it was a wonder she could even function at all. Karen, Sean, Davey, Hosea, and even Molly O'Shea. All gone in the blink of an eye, and all because of Micah Bell. With all that unnecessary death, it was no wonder she subsisted on anger these days.
By the same token, Eagle Flies had seen his fair share of death and sickness and injustice lately. His brother and mother had both been killed by the U.S. Army, and his father was a weak, old fool. His people suffered in sickness for lack of medicine and food, and the Army continued to harass them, steal their children, rape their women, and kill any of them they pleased. Eagle Flies' homeland had been taken from him, and no one around him except for Paytah and a few other young men had the courage or will to fight back.
