I woke up in the infirmary. People weren't running around, so I figured the battle was over, and given that I was breathing, we had won.
I looked over to see Clara asleep on her mother's lap. Farley slept with her arms around her daughter.
My mother slept with Gisa in her arms. Bree and Tramy slept on the floor. Dad slept on his own chair. Cal sat in the corner, somehow not snoring.
I began to sit up, but I fell back down and shouted in pain. This woke up Farley, who was trained to wake to the quietest of sounds. She shook Clara awake. Clara slipped to the floor and came over to me.
"Hi, Auntie." She said, tired.
"Hi, rascal. Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Thats good."
"You returned." She said, beginning to smile.
"How could I not? I can't leave my little lady." I said, messing with her hair.
"By the time you got down, the healers were all tired. They healed what they could, but you'll be waiting a bit until one of them is rested enough to heal your stomach. That Stoneskin did a real number on you. We were worried you... Would be away longer." Farley said. I understood what she meant.
"Its okay." I said. The others began to wake up. Cal sprang to his feet and put his hand on my shoulder.
"How are you?" He asked, face full of concern.
"You're cute when you're worried about me." I said. "Why did I say that?" I asked out loud. Farley and Clara began to laugh, and Cal blushed. He pointed at a fluid bag above my bed.
"Pain medication. Its known to... Remove a person's filter." He explained.
"I am going to shut up, in that case." I decided.
"Don't do that! I want to hear everything!" Gisa said, much too happy.
"Don't make me pull the injured card."
"Not much of a card. You'll survive and those meds will keep you without pain. In other words: I don't much care." Mom swatted her arm.
"Its okay, sweetheart. We won't hold what you say against you." She said through a smile.
"You called him cute!" Clara shouted. Cal's face flushed more. We all laughed, which hurt my stomach.
"Ah." I complained outloud. Mom put her hand on my stomach.
"We should let you rest." She suggested.
"No! I mean... Don't leave." They looked at each other, and they took their seats. Except for Cal, who stayed by my side. He swept some of my hair behind my ear.
"I can go check on the healers."
"No, let them rest, Cal. I can handle being in bed for a couple of hours. Besides, if I'm healed, I'll have to go to a debriefing. This is preferable."
"Predictable as ever, Mare Barrow." He chided me.
"Hello?" A familiar voice entered the room.
"Davidson! Come in." I waved him in.
"Are you alright?" He asked.
"Just waiting on the healers to rest. I'll live." I reported.
"Good. Thats good. I just came to check up on you. I'm no longer premier, so I have a bit more freedom. Premier Radis should be down here soon to check on you, but he's stuck in a meeting."
