"Now you know the truth

"Now you know the truth. What you are and have been," Poseidon spoke softly as he placed an arm on my shoulder reassuringly. I gently pushed it off and walked away from him back to the window, returning to our previous place.

"The truth...Should I be grateful for this knowledge? It feels like I've become undone; everything I've ever known now feels like a façade, and I would rather remain in the dark. To hear about such an act and find out that in a former life, I was the one who did this makes me sick to my stomach," I confessed, my voice trembling with anger and disbelief. I had always believed I was meant for more, constantly second-guessing my true destiny. The idea that I could be capable of such cruelty was beyond my comprehension.

"There is a lot of darkness in this world, Amphitrite. We are all capable of doing things that we could never imagine and have done things we regret deeply. However, on rare occasions, we are given opportunities to correct our mistakes. This is why you have been reborn; you have come back to correct the errors of your past," he consoled, trying to reach out again, but I pulled away in anger.

"I am not Amphitrite! I'm not a 'sea goddess' that's been reincarnated. I cannot take on any more." Poseidon laughed, which only enraged me more. He looked at me like a child at that moment, one who had said something ridiculous, but you can't get upset because they don't know better. "Don't laugh at me!"

"Oh, Nereida, stop whining. Furthermore, do you think you have a choice? This all has been preordained; it is your purpose. How do you explain your ability to 'know' things before they happen? Feel what's right? Translating the tablets, finding Asherah, that manipulation of the waves the night you were taken aboard the pirate ship?" Poseidon pressed on with his questioning, listing different occurrences.

"You know about that?" I whispered.

"Of course I do. As I have said, the gods and I have been watching. We are always watching. Someone causing such a commotion does not go unnoticed, and make no mistake, Niri, you have been noticed."

"I–" Poseidon held up his hand.

"The day you were born, I came to your room while your parents slept. Nothing immediately struck out at first, and I assumed you to be another squawking babe till I looked closer, and there on your skull was the finest white hair. Do you believe that you, who have black and red-haired parents, came from them? No, they were just the vessels to bring you to this world." He stroked my hair, pushing it behind me. "Do you want to know how you received this? It was a wedding gift to Amphitrite by the moon goddess, Selene. She was a good friend to her, helping her control the ocean; both were inseparable. Moon and sea. On the day of our wedding, Selene kissed the top of Amphitrite's head, and her hair turned from dark to white. The transition of sea nymph to goddess."

"But lots of mermaids have white hair, I would presume," his face darkened, and I regretted having said anything.

"You are skeptical after everything you've been told?" he asked angrily.
