A/N) ok so these aren't really oneshots but here's a collection of headcanons about the Octonauts reminiscing about their past. I'm only going to do Cap, Kwazii and Peso first coz otherwise it'll be way too long. I'll do the rest later don't worry.
Barnacles: The Captain sat on his bed and looked around. Photographs of his early years in the Polar Scouts program adorned the walls. It was almost ironic, really, the way Barnacles surrounded himself in memories of his old family in his new home. Sometimes sore wounds had to be addressed, Barnacles guessed. He let himself slip into a reverie.

Two young polar bears, on the lip of an ice cave.
"It's a big world out there," their mother tells them.
"I wonder how big," says one.
"Let's find out," says the other.
The tussle and tumble down the snow hill into the big outside world, getting covered in snow as they do so. Their mother chuckles and watches from afar.

Barnacles looks up at the polar bear in the uniform.
"Sir? Did I pass the test?"
The Polar Scouts leader rechecked the paper he held in his hand, then looked at the relatively diminutive Barnacles. He shook his head gravely.
"I'm afraid not," the bear said slowly. Then, seeing the look of disappointment on Barnacles' face, he kneeled down and looked the young polar bear in the eyes. "I like you," he smiled. "You've got the makings of a Captain in you."
"Really?" Barnacles looked hopeful.
"Absolutely. Your navigation is great, your polar bear strength is coming along nicely, and most importantly..."
"Most importantly?" Barnacles asked, eager to know what set him apart from other polar bears.
"Most importantly, you have determination. I've watched you earn more and more badges. You might not be the fastest, or the biggest, or the strongest, but you're brave and you never give up. That's what matters in a Captain."
"Thank you sir!"
The older polar bear nodded his head.
"That's why I've recommended you to Professor Natquik. I've talked to your mum and sister about it, he doesn't live too far away. He's an arctic fox, and I'm sure he'd love a diligent student like yourself."
Barnacles was excited at the prospect, but knew he'd miss his mother, and most of all, his sister Bianca.
But still! Professor Natquik! Barnacles had never heard of him, but he certainly sounded skilled. And to think that one day, Barnacles might be Captain!
"Of course, sir! I can't wait to get started!"

The Captain found himself fingering a picture of his first day with Natquik. The years with the Professor had been rewarding, and now he was a Captain. He had a crew to protect with his incredible strength, but the scout leader's words had never left his head since that moment.
