The Prideful - Part One is the sixth chapter of Mo Dao Zu Shi.
Synopsis:
After a few days of travel, Wei Wuxian realizes that the donkey he chose is entirely too difficult to please, a terrible pet and a terrible mount. At midday, the donkey seeks shelter beside a well and refuses to leave.
Other people gathered by the well view Wei Wuxian, with his disheveled hair and makeup, with unease. However, he quickly makes room for them in the shade, and the Round-Faced Girl smiles at him in thanks.
Listening to their conversation, he realizes that they are cultivators from a smaller clan. They plan to use one of Wei Wuxian's own inventions, the Compass of Ill Winds, during a night-hunt on Dafan Mountain.
Before the cultivators depart, the Round-Faced Girl gives Wei Wuxian a ripe apple in thanks. The donkey eagerly tries to eat the apple, so Wei Wuxian uses a long stick and a fishing thread to hang the apple on one end. He dangles it in front of the donkey so that it chases the apple all the way to Dafan Mountain.
In the small Fojiao Town, Wei Wuxian overhears people questioning whether there even is a soul-stealing creature, as the Compass of Ill Winds has shown nothing despite the fact that seven people have lost their souls.
A girl bumps into him and begins to dance wildly before her distressed mother drags her away. Listening to gossip, Wei Wuxian learns that the girl is A-Yan, one of seven people to lose their souls recently, and the only one to gain hers back. Still, her mind has been permanently altered by the experience.
As he climbs the mountain, Wei Wuxian passes a group of descending cultivators complaining about the actions of Jiang Cheng.
