Jude hadn't anticipated to be studying law in college. Her initial knowledge about the major would probably only be the few true crime podcasts she listens to from time to time. It wasn't her forte, but the choice stood out and taking it hadn't caused her any problems. Her life is still quite as unremarkable as ever. She has a friend, Alex, who sits next to her in classes. They're a great company, but she could say their relationship doesn't really go beyond classes. It was like Alex is her exact copy. Just like Jude, Alex prefers to live life in their own presence. They were her only friend, but a highlight in her day to day life. Jude couldn't ask for a better company - that is, before Vinny came into the picture.
Her companion from her childhood had finally graduated high school and is joining her at the same university. Since his official move to the neighborhood last year, taking residence in his late uncle's house, their friendship had evolved, now tinged with deeper emotions.
This morning, first day of Vinny's semester, Jude had promised to pick him up and take him to college with her. As she patiently waits in her civic parked on Vinny's driveway, her fingers tapped giddily on the steering wheel. Vinny had chosen a different major than hers, surprisingly a literature major. Even though his faculty is located miles away from hers, the thought of Vinny going to the same place as her everyday is making her tingle all over with happiness. It was like their lives are slowly intertwining.
Hearing the sound of the front door opening, Jude notices the brown haired boy step out of his house and approached her car. In his classic clumsy fashion, he suddenly stopped in his tracks and ran back to his door as he forgot to lock it. Jude laughs as he then dashed back towards her.
He opened the door to the passenger's seat, "Morning ma'am, you're here to pick up Vinny?"
"Yes sir, please take a seat." She joked back sarcastically.
"Alright, perfect." Vinny grinned and finally took his seat.
Smiling at the sight of her favorite boy next to her, she started her car and drove off towards their college.
On the way, she noticed Vinny's usual cheerfulness is gone and replaced by him being quiet. The boy's hands are clasped together, his eyes focused on the road outside of the window next to him.
"Nervous?" She asked.
Vinny snapped out of his trance and moved his gaze towards Jude.
"No I'm not."
"Heck yes you are." Jude snorted at his obvious lie, causing him to purse his lips into a small frown.
"I can't help it." he muttered, now playing with the strayed threads on his ripped jeans.
Jude looked at him with sympathy, she had felt the same way on her first day back then. In an attempt to console Vinny, she placed a hand on his shoulder and gave it a rub.
"You'll be alright. Everyone in your year feels the exact same way as you are right now. Don't worry, you'll make friends before you know it." She quickly looks at him with a smile before returning her focus on the road.
Jude takes Vinny's silence as him being unamused. She can't help but laugh and gave his hair a little tussle. This succeeded in making Vinny giggle a little, calling out Jude's name and telling her to stop as he swatted her hand playfully.
"So what are you studying again? Literature?" she said in an attempt to distract the boy from his nerves.
"Yeah, french." he replied as he used the reflection from his phone to fix his hair.
"French?! That's kind of unexpected from you. Why french?" Jude asked curiously. It was true that Vinny choosing to study french literature was unexpected.
"I don't know. Because Lily Rose-Depp." Vinny shrugged his shoulders but can't contain his smile at his own joke.
Jude laughed, throwing her head back a little as she tried to tussle his hair again but failed since the now laughing boy had precalculated her moves and avoided it. The ride soon ended as they finally reached the faculty where Vinny will be studying.
The boy took a deep breath, closing his eyes and held it for a moment before letting it out.
"Hey," Jude held his shoulder again to get him to face her. "You'll do great."
Vinny looked at her in the eyes lovingly, now seeming to be comforted, then leaned forward and wrapped his arms around her. "Thanks Jude."
Jude's cheeks were turning red and her heart was beating fast. Hoping Vinny doesn't notice, she returns the embrace and gave his back a rub and a few pats. Vinny soon let go of the hug and from his expression Jude could see that he is feeling a lot more eased. She too, felt a content feeling in her heart.
"Au revoir, mademoiselle." Vinny jokingly said with an accent that definitely needs practise, before opening the car door and stepping out. Jude watches as the boy jogged towards the building, then going out of sight once he entered through the doors.
The warmth of the hug still lingered around Jude's body. Feeling fuzzy and energized, she continues driving, leaving Vinny's faculty and heading towards her own.
After arriving, she ran a little towards her class as time went by a bit causing her to be a few minutes late. Upon entering, she was glad to see the class had just begun, meaning she technically wasn't late, and took the empty seat next to her usual seat buddy.
"Hey." she greeted Alex.
"Hey." they replied, immediately noticing Jude's contagious radiant energy. "well you look happy today, what's the occasion?"
Jude grinned at her already grinning friend. Grabbing her textbooks and preparing her pen, she cheerfully exhaled.
"Today's gonna be a great day."
