"P'Freen! We forgot Irin!" Becky, who had been sitting in the front passenger seat of Freen's Jeep with her eyes closed, sat bolt upright, startling the other girl.

The Jeep swerved into the oncoming lane of traffic until Freen frantically corrected the wheel. An SUV passing in the opposite direction blared its horn at her as she let out a sigh of relief.

"Oh my god, P'Freen! We have to go get her!" Becky's icy grey eyes were comically wide as she turned around in her seat to double-check her friend wasn't just hiding in the back.

Freen bit back a smirk. Becky and painkillers did not mix well. Freen had promised the other girl's Ma she would take care of her, though, insisting Ann didn't need to take the day off work.

It had seemed an easy task, but watching a spaced out Becky was like babysitting a four-year-old, if she wasn't napping then she was asking a million questions.

"Nong, she rode back with Engfa and P'Mew. We just came from the hospital, remember?" Freen said in a patient voice.

"Hospital?" Becky frowned. "Why? Are you okay, P'Freen? Did someone do something to you? Do I need to kick someone's ass- Ow...." In Becky's animated state, she had tried to move her left arm and found it in a sling.

A light pink fiberglass cast poked out the end of the sling. It covered her hand with space for her fingers and thumb and went halfway up to her elbow.

Becky inspected the cast like it was the first time she'd seen it, and Freen was glad the doctor at the hospital had prescribed her a lower dose of painkillers to go home with. She would just need to persevere until the stronger dose was out of Becky's system in a few hours.

"I'm fine, nong. You're the one who got hurt. Playing lacrosse. Do you remember?"

"Oh... Ka... Sure..."

Freen reached over the space between them and patted Becky's knee. "Why don't you close your eyes again? I'll wake you when we get to your house."

"Okay. Good idea." Becky agreed, her eyelids closing over like they had lead weights attached to them.

Freen gave a quiet sigh. Taking her hand back from Becky's knee, she ran it through her hair. It was going to be a long night. At least taking care of the other girl would keep her distracted from thinking about her parents too much.

Freen pulled up outside the house she shared with her uncle and left Becky sleeping in the car while she went inside. There was no point in waking her up. Freen only needed to grab her dress and her overnight bag.

Her uncle sat in the living room, stockinged feet propped up on the coffee table as he read a trashy paperback novel. Nadech set it aside when he heard Freen walking through the front door.

"Hi, uncle Nadech." Freen lingered at the bottom of the stairs.

Halloween was as hard for her mom's brother as it was for the teenager. She felt guilty about leaving him on his own, but Nadech always insisted Freen go out and enjoy herself with her friends.

"Freenky. How is Rebecca? Yaya told me what happened at the game."

"She's passed out in my car high on painkillers, so she's pretty good." Freen teased, drawing a look of disdain from her uncle. "She's fine. Her wrist is broke so she won't be playing for a while."

"Yaya mentioned the accident happened because Seng made a bad pass. Is that true?" Nadech sat up straighter, slipping into principal mode.

"I dunno. I guess she wasn't open and there was this guy twice her size marking her. Even if he didn't mean for it to happen, I doubt he was shook up about it." Freen gave a shrug.
