"There's something I should have told you." Freen said to Becky. It was Tuesday afternoon, and they were sitting in her uncle's car outside Freen's house. She bit her lip, apprehensive of how the other girl might take the admission."What is it?" Asked Becky.
Freen took a deep breath. "It's not just my uncle we're having dinner with. Her partner is going to be there too."
"Oh." Becky relaxed, a smug grin spreading over her lips. "Don't worry about it. I'm sure I'll win her over with my British charms."
"Ka." Said Freen, agree. "And... my uncle's partner is a someone from our school."
"Even better!"
Freen laughed at the other girl's candour. If it surprised her to learn Principal Nadech was dating someone from their school, then she didn't show it. But there was more.
"You don't have to worry about winning her over, she already loves you." She said as they both climbed out of the car.
Becky frowned. "Are you trying to tell me your uncle is dating my Ma? I'm not sure I'm redneck enough to date my cousin-"
"It's not your Ma!" Freen rolled her eyes. She paused at her front door, biting her lip again. "It's Ms. Yaya."
Becky stared blankly at her before she burst out laughing. "Coach Yaya? Right, good one, P'Freen."
"It's not a joke. They've been together for years."
"You're serious." Becky said, scrutinising her expression closely and finding no hint of deceit.
"I am. Aunt Yaya is like aunt to me." It hadn't always been that way. Freen had butted heads with Yaya a lot in her early teens. Back then her uncle had been dealing with his own grief at losing not only a sister but his twin.
The normally strict principal had allowed Freen to get away with a lot in the first years of living with him, while Yaya had been the one to set boundaries and rules. Freen hadn't appreciated her efforts at the time, but with age she realised Yaya's tough love was for her benefit.
"Is-.. is it too late to back out, P'Freen?" Becky asked with a shaky voice.
"Yes." Freen laughed. Taking hold of Becky's hand, she played with her fingers as they stood on the porch. "Don't worry na. You'll be fine... I'm right here with you."
"Lucky me." Becky grinned, forgetting what was waiting for her on the other side of the door as she leaned in closer to Freen, intending to kiss her. She was rudely reminded as the front door flew open and Yaya loomed over her.
"Rebecca, just what the hell do you think you're doing!?"
"Coach!" Becky almost jumped a foot in the air. She dropped Freen's hand and turned to face the older woman like she was addressing a drill sergeant.
"Aunt Yaya." Freen spoke her name like a warning and Yaya's stern expression cracked open, giving way to a broad smile.
"Relax, Rebecca, I'm just fucking with you. Come on in." Yaya ushered the blonde inside.
Freen followed her, closing the door behind them. It was the first time Becky had been over to her house and Freen was aware of the younger girl taking everything in as Yaya led her into the living room.
Becky's eyes travelled to the framed family photos on the walls, pictures of Freen and her uncle and of Nadech and a woman who had to be his twin, Freen's mother. She was pretty, with the same striking dark looks that Freen and Nadech shared.
"Rebecca, lovely to see you again." Nadech stepped out of the kitchen and into the living room wearing an apron that said 'Kiss the Cook'. "I was sorry to hear about your wrist."
