The Reluctant Recruit

The two men held out their badges, and the one on the left said, "FBI. I'm Special Agent Kawa and the gentleman to my left is Special Agent Colavito. We need to talk."

I let the two FBI agents in and they began to tell me that Bette was the Prime Suspect in the bank incident. They called her a Terrorist! They even said that they compared images of her visiting the bank to footage at the UN bombing, and confirmed that she had been there too.

My head was reeling, "Not Bette, no way. She couldn't have been responsible".

They could see how uncomfortable I was. Agent Colavito spoke up first, "Look Tyler... Can I call you Tyler? We need to act quickly. We're working with Canadian authorities as well because we believe that she may be planning something in Canada. Lives could very well be at stake here!"

"You need to understand," added the other agent, "it's not just the video images. The explosives used in both New York and Boston were linked because they are a new untraceable type of bomb. Traces of this explosive were also found at the scene of an unsolved double-homicide a few months ago near Mamma Maria Restaurant. She's not who you think she is. She's extremely dangerous".

"Look sirs," I said, completely missing the part about Mamma Maria Restaurant, "I think you have it all wrong. She's just an innocent girl. She's not planning anything in Canada, she's from there. She went back to her family in Quebec City."

"She's in Ottawa Tyler", Agent Colavito countered, "Thanks to your phone call, we've been able to track her location." Ottawa is like Canada's Washington, DC".

"Wait... What do you mean my phone call? Have you been listening..."

Agent Kawa looked directly at me and said, "Tyler, Police and FBI have been listening to your phone since the day you left the police station. I might add that it's been exhausting. We have had three of our civilian monitor/transcribers quit because they couldn't stand to listen to your voicemail messages anymore."

Agent Colavito continued, "Thanks to the conversation you just had, we have an opportunity here. We need your cooperation to locate and apprehend her in Ottawa, before she hurts anyone else."

"And if I refuse to cooperate?" I asked.

Agent Colavito gritted his teeth, attempting to keep his composure, "You provided security information and private access to a disturbed terrorist, which she then used to rob the East Boston Savings Bank, and access secure documents. As such, you could be considered an accomplice and indicted for acts of Domestic Terrorism. How does that sound to you?"

I gulped. That didn't sound very good to me. I didn't want to see Bette get into any trouble, but I couldn't say no either. I was in difficult position. I thought about it for a minute.

I had a brilliant idea, if I agreed to this, maybe I'd get the chance to talk to Bette, and we could get back together.

I stood up, "Okay gentlemen, what do I need to do?"
