RONNIE

I went back home with joy in my heart. I have a job! Sthoko was happy when I told her the good news. I was happy too, no, I was more than happy. I couldn't explain the feeling inside me. I should have done this a long time ago, instead of being a drunkard. I don't have a fancy wardrobe, but I can manage with black and white. I will just settle for the sneakers Sthoko got me for now, until I can buy more professional shoes. Most people will ask why I am so excited by just being an assistant, but this job will put food on the table. My family will not go to bed hungry, they will have something to eat. I have already ironed my clothes, and I am ready for tomorrow.

Sunrise was seen by me, I was the first to wake up. My excitement couldn't allow me to sleep, I just hope Bongani doesn't have a change of heart and decide he doesn't want me to be his assistant. I need this job.

I prepared the girls for school, and dropped them off on my way to the taxi rank. I arrived at the building, and my palms were sweating excessively. I think I will just faint with all this anxiety. Okay Ronnie, you got this! Relax.

I calmed myself down, and headed inside. The receptionist was the first to welcome me, I got to find out that her name is Thandaza. She's really beautiful, and kind. Perfect for being the image of the company. She directs me to Bongani's office, and tells me to relax. I will relax when I have signed the contract.

I arrived at his office, and knocked twice. He told me to come in, and I was amazed by the beauty inside. The office was very spacious, and the walls were white. There was a big, gray couch that looked comforting. His desk was neat, and tidy, with a small fern bringing life to the whole set up.

I shakingly moved my feet and greeted, "Morning, Sir"

He stood up, and gave me a handshake. He told me to sit down.

Bongani: I'm really glad you came. I am in dire need of an assistant. My wife fired the old one because she complimented my beard.

I laughed a little.

Ronnie: I couldn't miss this opportunity for the world, Sir.

Bongani: Please call me Bongani.

He is surprisingly nice for a big shot boss. I smiled, and nodded. He proceeded to inform me of my duties, and luckily I have experience with computers because that's one of the requirements. We then discussed my pay, and it's not too bad at all. Infact, it's generous, and way too much for just an assistant. Sthoko will be happy, and proud. I went to the HR department to finalize my contract, and I was an official member of the company.

The morning wasn't bad at all, I was just following Bongani to his meetings, and making notes and taking minutes.

It was time for my lunch break, and I went to the cafeteria with the other workers. I brought my own lunchbox, Sthoko's mother cooked yesterday, nothing fancy, just beef and rice.

I took the opportunity to call Sthoko, and find out how she is doing.

Sthoko: First day at work and you are already making secret calls.

I laughed, and took the spoon to my mouth.

Ronnie: It's lunchtime.

Sthoko: I take it everything went well.

Ronnie: Yep, I even signed the contract.

Sthoko: I'm so happy for you, Ronnie. You deserve this.

We fell into comfortable silence, until she spoke.
