I was in pain. It stirred me from slumber, pulling at the depths of my mind. I forced my heavy eyelids to open, finding myself in a dimly lit room. I groaned, hoping to flex my aching body, only to find my wrists bound to the arms of the chair I was on.
I almost screamed at the sight of the bandages wrapped around my arms and legs, stained with blood. I cried out as the pain multiplied as my body awakened. I yelled out for help, hoping someone would find me.
The memory of the wolves pouncing on Tammy and I came to mind, as well as claws and sharp teeth digging into my muscles. I whimpered, my wounds coming alive. I looked around me as I questioned Tammy’s whereabouts. Was she alright? If I was alive, that meant she was too, right? But where was she?
The door at the opposite end of the room opened. A large man walked in, arms behind his back. He wore black pants and a crisp white shirt with black shoes that clicked against the floor. Relief washed over me at the prospect of salvation.
“Hello? Could you help me, please? I need to get to my friend. Have you seen her?” I asked the man as his form became clearer the closer he got.
A scar ran down the back of his ear, disappearing into the collar of his shirt which has the top two buttons undone. Shadows were cast over the sharp features of his face, his dark eyes looking down at me as he towered over me at seven feet. His dark hair was buzzed short at the sides and combed messily at the top.
“Hello, I am the Beta. I will ask questions and you will answer me. You will obey everything I tell you,” he began, his voice deep and thundering.
As his voice bounced off the walls of the small room, my situation sunk into my skull. Last I remembered, worked were tearing at us to kill is. Then how did I end up here, bound to a chair in this room? If I had been rescued, would I not be in a hospital bed right now?
“Where am I?” I asked, my voice faltering as my heartbeat picked up.
My head whipped to the side violently, pulling at the muscles of my neck. A sharp noise rang in my ear, blood rushing to the side of my head where the impact had occurred. My senses were numb and unfocused for a while. When I recovered, half of my face was Ringling with a burning sensation. I tasted blood on my tongue as I had probably bit into it.
I felt confused for the first minute as I tried to figure out what had happened to me. Before me, the large man stood stoic and unmoving as he watched me. His hands were still behind his back and not a strand of hair was out of place.
Something had hit me. Was it this man, the Beta? How though, and why? His demeaning gaze made me feel small and afraid. The initial shock wore off, my muscles tight with tension.
“I don’t like repeating myself but I will do this just once more. I ask the questions, you answer. Is that clear?” his loud voice boomed.
I flinched, then nodded my head in response. I didn’t want to get hit again. I was in a dangerous situation. Hopefully, if I complied, they would let me see Tammy. I just hoped she was not going through what I was.
“Use your words,” he commanded as he held my chin in a death grip, forcing me to look up.
I swallowed painfully. “Yes.”
He let me go, returning his hands to his back. The Beta stayed composed as he took in my every movement, from the trembling of my fingers to the rapid rise and fall of my chest and even my teary eyes. I was completely at his mercy.
“Who are you?” he asked, grabbing a chair from a corner and placing it on front of me to sit on.
“My name is Kendall Miller,” I stuttered.
“Where are you from?”
“Willow Heights.”
“Who sent you?”
I paused, surprised by the question. “What?”
His dark glare sent shivers down my spine as I realised had given him the wrong answer. I felt suffocated and I panted in fear, breaking out in a cold sweat. Was he going to hurt me?
“I- I mean, I don’t understand the question,” I fumbled over what to say to correct my mistake.
He tilted his head to the side, leaning in close. “Who sent you here?”
“I wasn’t sent-“
I screamed when the next slap came, jerking my head to the side and bringing my body along. I nearly fell out of the chair as it shook. Blood spewed from my nose, the side of my face aching painfully from repeated hits. What kind of monster was this?
“Please don’t hurt me,” I sobbed, my face a combination of blood, snot and tears. “Please-“
I tugged at my restraints in a pathetic effort to shield myself from the next hit. He stood to his full height and swung his arm without any energy but the impact was powerful and shook me. I screamed as he hit me over and over again until I could not cry anymore.
I was twitching in pain when it was over, my throat hurting from my cries. The Beta pulled out a handkerchief and wiped his bloody hand. He remained clean and put together while I was a mess. I could not feel my face while my wrists burned from when I pulled at the restrains, my wounds bleeding from the strain on my body.
I considered begging for mercy but I just remained quiet. He heaved out a sigh and walked out, the door slamming behind him and making me jump.
All I could think about was Tammy as pain racked through my body. My best friend. The only person I had left. If something happened to her, would I be able to live with myself?
In the silence of the empty, dim lit room, I conjured up all my happy memories and pretended I was not tied to the chair in the middle of nowhere.
